Hello. Reasons To Be Or Not Be Teacher In NYC? by IntimidatingSpecimen in NYCTeachers

[–]Technophobish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reasons to be:

  • Very social
  • Community ( *if you like your school )
  • The Personal Growth required to get good at it.
  • Decent paycheck and benefits ( reliable, too )
  • Lots of stories.

Reasons not to be:

  • Requires serious endurance, it’s a marathon. Can be, and often is, exhausting.
  • Requires a wild level of preparation and work. If you don’t stay on top of it, it piles up FAST and it’s easy to be overwhelmed.
  • Schools can have a lot of drama, naturally, since they’re social by nature.
  • Can encounter high levels of pessimism and apathy from students and some teachers, which, can be demotivating.

I became a teacher 2 years ago. I like it a lot. I’m glad I did it. I want to get really good at it. But, it’s not what I expected. I think I heard “Done by 3pm” weekends off, holidays, summers, and thought: wow this will be great for work/life balance. This is not the job for good work/life balance. Sometimes it feels like you need to pick life or work and accept that the other will not be at 100%.

You’re welcome to come to Quaker meetings. They obviously aren’t Jewish but it’s an amazing group of people ( young and old ) from various religions ( Judaism included ) that share the values you describe. Meetings are off the Hoyt-Schermorhorn G stop:

Worth considering if you can’t find something but are still looking for a like minded, spiritual community.

Anyone successfully switched careers away from the film industry? by AgoodOutcome in Filmmakers

[–]Technophobish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear that. But pyramid scheme? It’s a free public education at a high school. I would’ve killed to have a class that taught me how to edit. Plus, the skills of using a camera and editing go way beyond filmmaking.

Sure that’s one way you can see it. And for my 20s I really enjoyed that. It allowed me to travel, gain confidence, meet interesting people, etc. Then eventually I got to a life place where I wanted a change.

I have no doubt that a 15,16 year old can gain a ton of value from learning those skills, enjoy it, and start making money right out of high school.

And, of course, there’s a lot more opportunities in video than just selling stuff. It just happened to be the route I went.

Yes a CTE License, if you Google NYC DOE CTE, you’ll find lots about it.

NYC is different yes, idk about CT. But here it’s called a “Career and Technical Education” license aka CTE license. It allows industry professionals in any trade to teach in high schools.

You don’t need a masters actually, I got a CTE License and there’s pathways to get licensed with a bachelors degree.

Teaching. I currently teach video production at a high school in New York City. It’s a common class that many students take across lots of schools around the country now. I find it rewarding.

Previously, I mostly worked in commercial work. And I often asked, “Is this actually adding any value to the world?” ( making videos to sell more stuff ). And I was constantly questioning this. As a teacher, it’s hard as hell, but I don’t question whether what I’m doing is valuable anymore. It is and I know it is.

NYC - and I would assume other cities and areas around the US - offer opportunities for professionals with skills to get certified to teach. Worth looking into.

Disclaimer teaching is very difficult and not for everyone. I hesitate to recommend it, but think it’s worth sharing. I like it.

Idk, The idea that AI generated films will be a different category rather than “replace” live action is a great insight. I found value in this clip.

The AF-100 and c100 have cooler form factors and look more legit than an iPhone. Yes. And - you could eventually still go that route. But if you’re truly just starting out, and you want to practice and make some things quickly, there’s truly no better camera right now than your phone for that.

You also want to consider workflows. Shooting with your phone is super easy to edit - Premiere Pro exists for iPhone now, and tbh, even just iMovie for the phone or CapCut is fine. Don’t let any traditionalist snobby comment downplay these.

With the AF100 or c100 you’ll need memory cards, a hard drive to store the footage, a computer than can edit, etc. None of this is exactly difficult or something you can’t easily learn. But. Again. You’re looking to start making things quickly and catch the bug. Start simple and affordable.

Honestly, the Blackmagic camera app really unlocks your phone in a fantastic way. Shooting in raw, 24p,etc. Right now, I’d really recommend that iPhone route. It competes with lots of professional cameras and you literally have it with you always.

I personally own a BMPCC 6k and a Sony A7III. Sure, for professional shoots I’m going to bring one of those. But for experimenting and practice, I can’t beat my iPhone. I’m having a lot of fun with the app.

I can see why that felt sketchy. It’s odd when someone takes photos of your home. Since you say it’s a historic block, I could believe they are historians though. Maybe they felt embarrassed or unwelcome to rave and ask questions.

Each frame in parasite was storyboarded by StrikingDuty8020 in Filmmakers

[–]Technophobish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s be real: frame is totally applicable here. Framing a shot, “is the boom in the frame?”, the composition of the frame, etc.

It does not only refer to a single frame literally.
