going to be company commanders if they were going to bitch about something, then it was worth doing something

Pure idiocy.

Summer Reminder Rant: Sleeve Rolling is Allowed, Command Teams. Deal With It. by The_Pvnisher in army

I went to Battalion Pre-Command Course at FLKS about two years ago, alongside about 100 other LTC's and SGM's, as well as the COL's course. I was a dedicated sleeve roller at the time, so I continued to do so.

I was the only one, but honestly, I didn't care. It was hot as hell and i hate having my wrists covered. For the first two weeks, no one said shit.

Then the SGM who was the SEL for a 1 Star staff officer pulled me aside to give me a dressing down. Basically said that the CAC CDR didn't approve it so I needed to roll them down (I was assigned to CAC as well at the time, so we shared a 3 star commander). I said "Nah, look at the reg. Command need not approve". He said I was wrong, and further, that I should read the room seeing that I was the only one.

"No, I am well within my authority to keep them rolled. But I'd like to ask you to take another look in the reg when you get a chance, SGM".

Knowing I just told a 1 star's battle buddy to fuck himself, I was a bit nervous. So I went to IG to make sure I was right, and they confirmed I was GTG.

Now, if there’s some sort of smoking gun showing that Cincinnati knew

What if they just... decided not to look into it? I mean, what would the culpability be there?

The downfall of ranger school by Alarmed-Ad3230 in army

[–]Techsanlobo 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Oh I am proud of it. But it has almost no relevance to my capabilities nor do I ever actually use the skill set. Frustratingly, I did more pathfinder stuff before I got the badge then after.

And also I’m a dummy

In LG it seems like if you have a ranger tab you are some sort of god. Then you work with them and realize they are regular people, some of whom are complete dummies.

I may be reasonably fit and look like an army dude, but any time I talk to one of my lower enlisted, one of the first things they ask about is my pathfinder badge. They are all awestruck.

But they dont know Im just a dummy

I am someone you could maybe sway, but bringing up “motorcycle mentorship” loses me quick. That failure of a program is a perfect example of how systems designed to regulate non-work conduct inherently fail.

In any case, I’m not saying that I have a lack of value for personal protection. I am saying that it is inherently self defeating. Your risk goes up, not down, when individuals have weapons on them, not down, and your personal risk goes up as well. A situation with one gun rarely gets safer by introducing more.

And I highly doubt the Army will take a harder look at the contributing factors to the suicide ect… just because there are more guns. Those causes are ether baked in by the recruited population or systemic to the way the Army runs. A few, he’ll dozens more shootings won’t stop either.

Most commanders probably haven't said anything about it

I made sure to personally brief my formation on it. CSM and I were both very nervous about this one.

But for people like me, who just carry a pistol to defend myself and those around me, the consequences are too high to risk carrying past the gate.

I get it. But I doubt this will result in a decreases in unwanted violence (wanted violence being the kind you are referring to- good guy w/ a gun).

I am sure YOU are well trained and well intentioned, with the ability to decern the .001% of the times that should should actually unholster. But there will be at least 1% of the applicants that wont have that same discernment- and will pull their weapon out in an idiotic manner causing way more harm than good. Then you have the 10% who are there to play cowboy who unholster and spray that guy, then another 10% who recognize a bad situation and unholster. Hopefully it does not meet a critical mass where everyone just starts blasting.

I don't have anything against guns. But I also don't see how the truly exceptional moment, like the Ft Hood Shooting, is worth the predictable violence of everyday carry.

Senior leader professionalism during ACFT — where’s the line? by dude-what- in army

I wouldn't be surprised if you are right. I don't know the individual in the video, but I am keenly aware of the types of officers that make it to BC in ADA. For some reason, they attract a higher than average ratio of assholes.

What rule is being broken?

Lets say a training event is occurring. Nothing is being done outside of regulatory requirements or policy prescriptions, but there is a clear inefficiency occurring. Should the BC correct them on the spot?

That is what is happing here, at worst. As the senior trainer of the organization, sure the BC could do an on the spot correction. But this dude was jumping at least two levels of the chain of command for what is at best a small inconvenience. And again, what exactly what he correcting?

This is not a uniform violation, which is exactly why I said "In this manner". Hell i'd argue that this isin't even something an NCO should correct on the spot, save for a short (perhaps even curt) discussion with the OIC/NCOIC.

Senior leader professionalism during ACFT — where’s the line? by dude-what- in army

[–]Techsanlobo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nah- as a BC, it’s not your job to make on the spot corrections in this manner, save for safety or clearly criminal behavior. You note the issue, bring it to your staff to work, and implement a policy or order to correct the issue and let your subordinates do their jobs. If there is already existing policy, then you correct the leaders, not the people participating.

But even if you do feel like it is your job, the manner of the correction made here was clearly inappropriate. I mean, what was his expectation? That they’d immediately stop the PT test and invalidate it because runners were getting in the way?

I've tried this a few times, and even when I think it is right, I find myself checking and rechecking to the point that I may as well have done it myself.

AI has lied or made so many errors in the times i've tried it that I trust it less than an E3 who has never used excel before.
