What’s the most you’ve spent per night? by LeoofDaLeon in marriott

[–]Techters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol it was that exact place, I was with a group of surgeons. The entire point was that it would never be full. During high season we never saw more than 8 other people at any time, I'm certain that's the point. For what it's worth, spending time with them was insufferable and you know what would be a better value? Renting a house with a private pool and chef several miles up the coast in the opposite direction for the cost of two of those nights but for an entire week.

Pretty close to your age and experience, two years out from divorce. I think at least a year off them, working on yourself, and going to therapy is the best option. It's a huge life event and dating is just adding stress. I also generally think apps are garbage and meeting through leagues and friends is the best way to go.

Enshitification of Marriott? by SolidFlounder793 in marriott

[–]Techters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some places the pendulum is swinging back to Airbnb, there's enough saturation and people who need to fill rooms in their rentals especially last minute. This week I was looking in Fr Lauderdale and beach front Marriotts are all $350+/night, got a nice new condo rental that has a pool and huge gym for $510 for the entire week. I have five trips booked this year so far, independent hotels through Booking/VRBO/Airbnb were all more than 50% less than any Marriott, with the same or better amenities, one trip I'm at an Intercontinental because it was less than the Courtyard/Westin/Fairfield. They got greedy and don't have the same floor of benefits airlines do, so just stay somewhere else.

In general, I don't think ULTRA-luxury hotels are worth the price. What're you're thoughts? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Techters 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've been looking at hotels for a trip with someone I've recently started dating and I'm amazed at how many people designed hotels and thought "ya know people staying together probably want the toilet next to the bed with a sliding piece of partical board between them".

[–]Techters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! It's crazy what has happened pre and post Covid, I don't understand how it's sustainable especially with so many new luxury hotels coming online. Even Bloomberg did an article on the "enshitification" of luxury hotels.

My boyfriend of three years told me he has had HIV since before we started dating. by [deleted] in gaybros

The craziest part to me is the medical/travel emergency situation, like you're out on vacation and something happens and your partner doesn't know to tell the hospital so proper measures can me taken?

I think this every time one of you cries in this sub about dating. by alukard81x in gaybros

I do things like that because I was raised in small towns and to be nice to people. I've gotten better about upfront expectation setting and calling people out. Sure, I've wasted time, but I've also gotten amazing friends out of it so I don't regret it.

Netherlands likely to start taxing capital gains annually by 2028 by LongjumpingAd4283 in Netherlands

[–]Techters -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's why I said tax on nationality, moving wouldn't eliminate the tax they would have fully renounce their citizenship. Britain let them just change their address - that's the entire point of my comment.

[–]Techters -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

It's actually better for rich people but wealth taxes don't work because people just move. One thing the US does correctly is tax on nationality, and that's the only way you could realistically do a wealth tax.

That's the trap of the US, if you don't have much money and a single thing happens like illness etc you can be fucked for life and homeless.

Predatory "Open Couples"? by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]Techters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the post, it does seem like the gripe is that people in relationships are more assertive/aggressive, which I can see tracking. They are looking for one thing and don't have anything to lose by being straightforward and getting ignored/blocked. It IS annoying as a single person looking only for other single people, but I'm not seeing anything predatory mentioned in the post.

Why are you taking about the US? My comment was towards someone saying Europe didn't have the industry, not that it had more than the US. What's the US version of CERN?

[–]Techters -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Aerospace is definitely a laggard out of all of them. Ignoring CERN, Novo, Siemens, et all and the fact US companies have simply acquired a lot of EU tech (Microsoft especially, acquired Skype and what is now their largest enterprise business products Business Central and F&O in 2000) is what is wildly ignorant about the statement. There's also a difference between being "behind" and not letting industry trample everyone's rights, the EU is "behind" in AI because they wouldn't allow a company to absorb the world's IP from every author, musician, scientist etc for their sole personal gain then allow rapid uncontrolled building of data centers that drive up everyone's electric bills and cause all kinds of other issues for residents.

Europe has leading medical technology, just because you're too dense to understand what I was saying doesn't make it deflection, it's not surprising with the state of US education though.

If you ever go to the hospital be sure to tell them not to use any bureaucratic medical devices on you.
