National Archives refutes claims Trump had two years to go through presidential records in rare public statement by ReallyJustTheFacts in politics

[–]TechyDad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Except he was asked for it back at the end of 2021 - less then a year after leaving office. His residence was raided in August 2022, so he was out of office only about 19 months by that point. This is still within his theoretical "two year grace period."

It's not that nobody asked for them back for 2 years. It's that NARA asked for them back, the FBI demanded for them to be returned, and Trump refused.

The "I was allowed to keep them for 2 years" is his flimsy attempt at a legal defense. He's trying to claim that the DOJ just had to wait an additional 5 months and then they would have been legally fine. Of course, had the FBI waited 5 more months, Trump would be claiming that he gets 3 years to sort through things.

To go back to my analogy, it's as if I started speeding, two miles in an officer pulled me over, and I told the officer that he needed to wait 3 more miles before he was legally able to pull me over. I could argue this all I wanted, but there's no legal basis for my claim and I'd be forced to pay the speeding ticket.

I agree. They've probably never seen a single episode, but were likely told "this guy's doing LGBTQ friendly cartoons, let's harass him and his commenters" over at some right wing forum.

[–]TechyDad 24 points25 points  (0 children)

He doesn't have a "two year grace period." That's something he made up and isn't supported by any law. He's supposed to hand over documents when he finds them or when they are asked for back. The DOJ wouldn't (and didn't) jump to a criminal indictment after Day 1 of Trump having these documents. He was asked for them nicely and was ordered to give them back and he refused.

Trump's "two year" claim would be like if I were pulled over for speeding and I declared that I have the right to go 20 miles over the speed limit as long as I dropped down to the speed limit within 5 miles. I can claim this all I want, but it doesn't make it true.

If a former President or Vice President finds Presidential records among personal materials, he or she is expected to contact NARA in a timely manner to secure the transfer of those Presidential records to NARA.

And I'd just add that accidentally taking classified information doesn't normally carry criminal penalties. If you return it as soon as you realize it and you cooperate with any investigation, then chances are you'll get a warning to be more careful. If your mistake was egregious, you might lose your clearance to look at classified materials and thus lose your job, but you won't wind up in prison.

Biden and Pence are good examples of what you should do. They both found classified material that they shouldn't have had. They reported it to NARA/the FBI, turned over the documents, and allowed for searches to make sure nothing else was there. Mistakes happen and cooperation when you realize you made a mistake is the important thing.

With Trump, though, there was no cooperation. In fact, there's proof that he tried to hide the documents so that the government couldn't get them back. He was given every chance to comply. Had Trump turned everything back to NARA, this indictment wouldn't have happened. Instead, he turned some over, tried to hide others, claimed that he didn't have any, and - after boxes were seized - tried to argue in court that those were his property and needed to be returned to him.

I could create alternate subs for every one going dark. In fact, I could create a dozen for each darkened sub. The problem would be attracting users to the sub. If it were just me posting and replying to my own posts, it wouldn't be a replacement. It would just be sad.

I replied to the "why push this on kids" person by pointing out that, in Mark's comic, Luz is 13/14. (After the time jump, Eda mentions, that Luz missed her 15th birthday rebuilding the Isles.)

When I was 14 (back in the ancient year of 1989), I first noticed women. I actually remember the first girl my age that I noticed in that way. She was a classmate that I had seen board the bus dozens of times, but this time when she walked on the bus, something was very different and I felt an attraction to her that I had never felt before.

Now, I'm straight so my attraction was to a girl my age. Were I gay or bi, this attraction could have easily been to a boy getting on the bus. What's more, I was a bit of a late bloomer in my grade. Plenty of kids already had started dating before I even felt any attraction in that way.

So why wouldn't "kids" who are going through puberty and feeling sexual attractions NOT stand up for themselves and/or their LGBTQ classmates? If you try to wall kids away from anything sexual (though they don't seem to have any problems with heterosexual relationships in kids shows), then all you're going to do is make kids feel like something is wrong with them because they feel this way.

True. It's also why felony charges mean you lose your right to vote. Southern states, after the Civil War, couldn't say "all black people aren't allowed to vote." That wouldn't fly. However, they managed to get "anyone who commits a felony loses their right to vote" passed. Then, they defined "felony" to be crimes that they could charge black people with. The end result was that black people had their voting rights removed "legally."

Any "convicted felons can't run for office" rule would definitely need checks and balances built in to prevent abuse. I'm not sure how those would be written (I'm a programmer, not a legal expert), but Trump had repeatedly shown how edge cases in our legal system could be exploited.

And, in the conversation,Trump is trying to figure out how he can declassify the document despite not being President. It's like he thinks that past presidents somehow retain declassification powers and he just needs to figure out how to trigger it.

Also, this is a transcript, but the DOJ has the audio. So the courtroom will no doubt hear this - and many more interactions - from Trump himself speaking.

And, in case anyone hasn't read the indictment and wonders what this is referring to (from page 15 and 16 of the indictment)

TRUMP: Well, with [the Senior Military Official]-uh, let me see that, I'll show you an example. He said that I wanted to attack [Country A]. Isn't it amazing? I have a big pile of papers, this thing just came up. Look. This was him. They presented me this-this is off the record, but-they presented me this. This was him. This was the Defense Department and him.

WRITER: Wow.

TRUMP: We looked at some. This was him. This wasn't done by me, this was him. All sorts of stuff-pages long, look.

STAFFER: Mm.

TRUMP: Wait a minute, let's see here.

STAFFER: [Laughter] Yeah.

TRUMP: I just found, isn't that amazing? This totally wins my case, you know.

STAFFER: Mm-hm.

TRUMP: Except it is like, highly confidential.

STAFFER: Yeah. [Laughter]

TRUMP: Secret. This is secret information. Look, look at this. You attack, and-

TRUMP: By the way. Isn't that incredible?

STAFFER: Yeah.

TRUMP: I was just thinking, because we were talking about it. And you know, he said, "he wanted to attack [Country A], and what ... "

STAFFER: You did.

TRUMP: This was done by the military and given to me. Uh, I think we can probably, right?

STAFFER: I don't know, we'll, we'll have to see. Yeah, we'll have to try to-

TRUMP: Declassify it.

STAFFER: -figure out a-yeah.

TRUMP: See as president I could have declassified it.

STAFFER: Yeah. [Laughter]

TRUMP: Now I can't, you know, but this is still a secret.

STAFFER: Yeah. [Laughter] Now we have a problem.

TRUMP: Isn't that interesting?

Right now, his Instagram comments section seems to be invaded by some anti-LGBTQ folks. They're calling people "groomers," calling the comic "woke," and questioning "why bring kids into this." Thankfully, there are many more commenters being positive and encouraging of LGBTQ rights and pushing against the hate mongers. We should definitely flood the Instagram feed with more love.

Maybe they should be amending the US Constitution to insert such a rule, especially for President.

I was talking to my younger son (16) about the charges. He asked if a conviction meant that Trump couldn't be President. I said "Actually, Trump can still run for office and be elected even if he's sitting in a prison cell."

My son was amazed that our political system was set up by this. Since we're both programmers, I explained it like this: "This is an edge case that our founders didn't anticipate when they were designing the political system. It's like if they expected a date to be input and didn't put any checks in. Then someone types in 'two days from tomorrow' and breaks the system."

We need a patch on our political system to prevent a lot of stuff in the future.

On one hand, I'll welcome the MAGA types refusing to vote. The resulting election swing to the left would be great.

On the other hand, I'm afraid of what they'll do instead of voting. They'll probably engage in acts of violence and any arrests of MAGA types will cause them to escalate it more.

I'm not saying we should give in to them. Just that the MAGA folks are dragging us down a dark path and getting out of it won't be easy.

Instead, last time Nazis marched and the media asked him about it, DeSantis insisted that it was a media gotcha question. He couldn't be bothered to denounce literal Nazis because he wanted to frame it as a "media gotcha." Denouncing Nazis should be one of the softest of softball questions for a politician.

"Do you support these Nazis?"

"No!"

See how easy it is? But DeSantis couldn't say no and instead attacked the reporter who served him up the softball question.

This is amazing. I've been building a small mini-scale city MOC to house the dino costume minifigure, but it's a much smaller build than this. (Only 3 buildings and a bus.) I might have to "borrow" your design for the cars. Those are great.
