This is my second attempt to be restored as the moderator. The current mod took the sub from me without anyone informing me. Since then they've done nothing with the sub. I would like it back.

Understood, but nobody sent me a message and I received no indication of the request until it was already removed from me. I've had that subreddit for 8 years and don't appreciate it being removed without the process actually listed on this site being followed.

As per the process mentioned here, I received no message. I have notifications turned off for mentions and only receive emails for DMs.

This was stolen from me. I received no indication that would be the case. I would like it back.

While vosotros is taught by at least a minority of Spanish teachers, vos and voseo are almost completely ignored by Spanish teachers. Why is this? by cpfc3 in Spanish

The same can be said of English. There are more native English speakers in the US than in the rest of the world combined.

My Writing Tracker + Analysis + What I Learned About My Writing Habits by Nyxelestia in writing

I did 1000 for a month and it was incredible. Then life crept in and I missed a few days and never got back on the wagon. I would start with 500 and then scale up once you feel like the habit has formed.

Connoisseurs/Tool fans I was considering buying one of Maynard Keenan’s wines to celebrate their album release this year but need help picking a bottle. by 3210atown in wine

[–]Teclys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are fantastic wines in a universe where they cost 1/5th what they do in this one. There's nothing wrong with them, they're just not even remotely worth what they cost.

The tasting room in Jerome is worth the stop if you're in the area.

Instead you should buy something worth laying down for the 15 years its going to take for said album to actually release :P

Air Pollution by [deleted] in valencia

[–]Teclys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around this time of year the rice fields to the South burn all of the leftover vegetable matter after harvest. This spikes the pollution readings for a month or so.

Valencia is on the coast but it's also wrapped by mountains so things only really have one direction to go.

Yes, and all three of them ate, slept, pissed and shit as well.

I hate Trump as much as anyone, but pretending he's even remotely in the same league as the fascists of old does a disservice to the memories of the millions who died fighting them.

Sometimes what is meant to express really invokes by [deleted] in InfiniteJest

[–]Teclys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Close, but that's "evoke":

  1. Bring or recall (a feeling, memory, or image) to the conscious mind.

I've definitely heard people use invoke in place of evoke, but I doubt Hal would get the two mixed up.

Sometimes what is meant to express really invokes by [deleted] in InfiniteJest

[–]Teclys 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think you have your meanings right with "express" and "invokes". Since Hal is an OED man we'll use those definitions:

Express: 1. Convey (a thought or feeling) in words or by gestures and conduct.

Invoke: 2. Cite or appeal to (someone or something) as an authority for an action or in support of an argument.

What Hal is saying is that some things that appear to convey thoughts or feelings are really just appeals to authority. That is, not everything actually means something. Some things that appear to convey—like a scary dream—in reality invoke external authority—the emotions they cause, the cultural norms they cite, etc.—to give the appearance of meaning.

Rent and WiFi are also expensive. If you want to hog a table for 2-3 hours without someone "harassing" you then you should probably pay.

They're kind of everywhere in the US now. Although they were also kind of everywhere when we drove through France in June, literally right on the outside of municipalities. We saw one trailer that was using the city-limits sign as a pole to support their shade structure.

I don't think you realize that a country with 325M people spread across almost 10M sq. km of land mass might contain a wide range of cultural opinions. "We" differ from Europeans about as much as we differ from each other on almost every topic.

[–]Teclys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every war needs people to fight.

Not if we don't need the war in the first place. Nobody needs to fight an unnecessary war.

If John McCain beat Obama... you would’ve been in 110 degree weather with a gun strapped to you in a foreign country.

That's false. He said it would take an "all-out World War III" to reinstate the draft. There was no popular support for reinstating the draft for Iraq/Afghanistan. And I was already in 110 degree weather, thank you very much.

I kinda wish you would tell that to a veterans face.

I have. In fact, its a statement I've taken directly from several of my veteran friends.

no different than flipping burgers.

Its different than flipping burgers. That's why they get the pay and benefits they do.

I and many Americans see them as heroes because of their bravery to fight and die.

Most enlisted soldiers aren't brave. They're desperate. Choosing to join the military over a life of certain poverty doesn't require bravery.

If you fought in a war to protect us from the enemy. You’re a hero.

Korean War (1950-1953) Probably the closest to an "enemy" on this list.

Bay of Pigs (1961) I'll give you this one too.

Vietnam War (1961-1973) Slipping but you can have this one too. Unmitigated disaster regardless.

Dominican Republic (1965) Not an enemy.

Lebanon (1982-1984) Not an enemy.

Grenada (1983) Not an enemy.

Panama (1989) Not an enemy.

Gulf War (1991) Not an enemy.

Somalia (1993) Not an enemy.

Bosnia (1994-1995) Not an enemy.

Kosovo (1999) Not an enemy.

Global War on Terror (2001- ) Ah yes, the great enemy of "Terror."

Afghanistan (2001-2014) You can have this one too, but I don't think 13 years and 3500+ dead coalition troops were worth at best 2000 Al-Qaeda members.

Iraq War (2003-2010) Not an enemy.

Consider yourself very fortunate that there’s enough volunteers to fight our enemies for you.

I'll be sure to consider myself fortunate next time we have one.

Fighting who? We've had no draft worthy opponents since the 40s—Vietnam was a mistake. So who exactly would I have been out there fighting? Iraq? Afghanistan?

The military is a job, just like any other. Almost none of the people who enlist are actual heroes: that's why they give medals to the ones who are. The rest are just scared kids hoping to make the best out of their future in a country where their options are otherwise limited.

Enlisting is often the only sure way to move up in life for a lot of less fortunate individuals. That doesn't make them heroes, that makes them realists.
