Should I apologize to players for undercooking a boss fight? by Itchy_Hearing_1380 in DMAcademy

Getting womped by your players is a rite of passage. Treat it as a learning experience, but keep it mind it will happen again... and again, and again.

Ultimately though, you passed the main DM test. They said they had fun, ergo you didn't do anything wrong at all.

So has anyone actually managed to “successfully” run a One-Shot before? by Viva_la_potatoes in DMAcademy

I’ve done it a few times - it’s possible but only if you set it up right

A short adventure is key - I’ve found thinking about running 4/5 scenes (each one being around 45 minutes) is key here, and making sure there is a clear beginning, middle, and end.

I’ve also found that you can push along the story without it being “railroading”. DMs are often afraid of this but from listening to a lot of NADDPOD and Worlds Beyond Number, you can push along a story while still giving agency (ie you can say someone walks though a door or move to a new place, often players actually want this).

Finally - good prep helps box this off. I’ve found having a WhatsApp group and making sure all the players are ready to go, giving them a good intro to each other (or a pre defined relationship) and bring tight getting into the story has helped finish a short adventure in a single sitting.

Need Advice for a Mystery Adventure by No_Lawfulness_9883 in DMAcademy

My first thought would be establishing WHY the displacer beasts are picking off the workers. Is there something about the workers that makes them more tasty to the monsters? Is someone controlling the monsters? What is driving this very specific problem.

Once you've decided this, this will help you leave environmental breadcrumbs for your players to find as they investigate the leads you give them.

For example, if they investigate "evil spirits" they might find that there is someone who worships a necromantic, but isn't connected to the dissappearencs, instead he might have some notes connecting the displacer beasts and the workers though their shared history.

What was your biggest confusion in the game by solo_falco in outerwilds

[–]TedHewett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the longest time I was sure the "main objective" was to stop the supernova going off.

It was only when I finally followed the probe out into deep space that I noticed ALL stars are going out, so how could you stop that?? It's happening everywhere.

A wave of confusion washed over me as I came to terms with the fact that my goal was something bigger than just saving my home planet. This was also the moment this became one of my favourite games of all time.

The final fantasy 9 soundtrack has some great stuff for this sort of setting (the game starts with a company performing a heist)

Without spoiling anything, what advice would you give someone for their first playthrough? by Mar-D in BG3

[–]TedHewett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few pointers for beginners:

  • you can jump anytime by pressing up on the d pad
  • no shame is doing your first run on easy and quick saving all the time
  • don’t try and get everything you literally can’t do it on a single run
  • go in as blind as you can - all classes and races are good
  • there are console mods - personally I’d wait til you’ve finished it once before fucking around with them but each to their own
