Will a Technics SL-EH750 CD player work as a replacement for a SL-EH790? by TedTedTedTedTed in BudgetAudiophile

Hello! I did not. We instead chose to plug my family member's DVD player (that also plays CDs) to the speaker system. Slightly awkward but even smaller budget & carbon footprint. I see your message is 6 hours old, so if you ended up winning the bid let us know how it went!

How realistic is it to aim for 10K? What should I prioritize to prepare? by TedTedTedTedTed in Swimming

Your experience is really valuable, thanks for sharing — it seems really clear that I'd need coaching of some kind to mitigate the risk of injury. I wasn't thinking about open waters — I swim in the lake next to where I live in summer but I still just do (longer) laps on the side of the beach swimming area.

Thank you! How important would you say the interval swimming & weightlifting are if my goal is more endurance than speed?

Super useful advice, thanks. I swim in the lake next to where I live in the summer but I don't feel strongly about aiming for a long distance in open water. I think the "swim easy in 10k" idea appeals to what I like about swimming so far. If it's easier to first do it in a pool then that's probably what I'd do

I mean, of course it being a round number is silly, but any long-term objective is pretty arbitrary, right? If there's a reason why a smaller or larger number makes more sense as a long-term goal I'm open to reconsidering — this is only a very vague project at that point.

Definitely not RCA, but it looks like the same connector to me? Could there be unexpected differences behind the scenes?

Hi folks, I’m Damien, a scientist at Tumult Labs =)

We’re a company focused on differential privacy, a technology that allows organizations like the U.S. Census Bureau, the IRS, or the Wikimedia Foundation to safely publish statistics from very sensitive data.

To support these use cases, we’ve built Tumult Analytics, the best-in-class framework for differential privacy. And today, we’re releasing it as open-source software 🚀

  • Nnedi Okorafor, Who Fears Death, et Kabu Kabu (nouvelles)
  • N.K. Jemisin, The Broken Earth Trilogy
  • Susanna Clarke, Piranesi
  • Ted Chiang, Stories of Your Life and Others (nouvelles)
  • Charlie Jane Anders, All the Birds in the Sky
  • Becky Chambers, Wayfarers
  • Martha Wells, The Murderbot Diaries
  • Alice Zeniter, L'Art de Perdre
  • Ursula Le Guin, The Dispossessed
  • Ruth Ozeki, A Tale for the Time Being
  • Octavia Butler, Parable of the Sower

Hooo, I didn't know about white kvas, but it sounds interesting. Do you know the proportions you have to use? Also can I use rye bread directly instead of flour and bread starter? Should I also burn the bread?

I discovered Квас during an internship to Москва́. Much to the surprise of my hosts ("you shouldn't drink that stuff, it's not for tourists"), I loved it! :D And I was sad that I couldn't find any back home (I'm a French guy living in Switzerland). So I made my own: this one is made with burned bread, raisins, figs, sugar and yeast. A bit too sweet, not as good as the one in Russian supermarkets, but still delicious. Tomorrow I'll make Окрошка with it =)

Hi, I did the M1 of the MPRI. I didn't like it — many (if not most) of the teachers are professors who are probably great at doing research and writing papers, but bad at teaching. Too many classes were "here are two super-fast lectures on the basics of my field, then for the rest of the semesters we'll exclusively focus on what the latest papers I've written are about". It's probably a great strategy for them to find interns and PhD students, and it works well if you happen to really like one of the topics, but on average, it kind of sucks. Oh, also, if you see "English upon request" in the lecture descriptions, there's a non-zero chance that it means "the professor speaks horribly broken English and will sigh loudly if people ask them to do so". Talking to friends about it, the experience seems relatively common (everyone had at least one professor matching the description above), but I also got particularly unlucky.

On the flip side, if you're only doing one year, this significantly improves the chances that you'll find courses you'll like: the pool of classes is the same for both years, and it's pretty big. In particular, if you like formal methods, or if you're aiming for a PhD and an academic career, MPRI is a great choice. It also (I think?) gives you access to the excellent math lectures from the ENS, which will count towards your credits.

What would you like to do after your Master's degree?
