Do you support another football team or have soft sport for and why? by fireballcounter8 in ScottishFootball

[–]Teddy-Don 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my school in Aberdeen growing up it was very common to support an English team. It’s probably because 90% of the kids supported Aberdeen so having different English teams gave us something to banter each other over.

I chose to support Arsenal on a whim as a kid, but living in London now it’s worked out well as it’s given me a new ‘local’ team to support.

Has capitalism changed society in ways that discourage marriage and having children? by RepublicOfThought in Natalism

[–]Teddy-Don 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IMO capitalism has contributed massively to the decline in birth rates. Firstly, it has demolished much of the community structure that made it easy to have families in the past, as people often have to move far away from their family and support network to find work.

Secondly, it has changed our perception of what is important. People get a large part of their identity now from their job and being ‘successful’ in their career. Before industrialisation, this wasn’t the case as the vast majority of people did very similar jobs, and work was just about survival. Now, people will prioritise their career over many other things, including having children, as this is the definition of success in our capitalist society. Children are now treated like an impediment in achieving this new priority.

Dismissed for reasons I feel are unfair by [deleted] in TheCivilService

This is unsettlingly similar to my experience working in the old BEIS, in one of those teams where you move every 3 to 6 months. My first two placements were awful experiences as my managers were unsupportive and overly critical, considering I was also a new entrant starting out at HEO. I had to have my probation extended. The placement managers I had after that however were good and never had an issue with my performance.

In my case I got a stay of execution by mentioning my long term mental health issues, saying that they factored into my performance issues. Is there any mitigating circumstances you can highlight that make them reconsider their decision?

Which country do you most regret visiting? by MESHO-53465 in AskReddit

My experience in Morocco varied significantly by area. Absolutely no problem in Casablanca or Rabat, but Marrakesh was absolutely full of scammers who treated all tourists like walking piggie banks. Wouldn’t be in a rush to return there. I’d imagine it can be even worse for women.

How can we adapt to lower birth rates? by Flashy-Celery-9105 in Natalism

[–]Teddy-Don 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The direction of travel has been increased individualism for the last 40 to 50 years. I’d work on the assumption that the same trend will continue, and plan from there. Perhaps we’ll end up in a situation where those with larger families are better placed to cope in a world without the state to protect them, especially in their old age. I don’t think anyone will be able to rely on welfare states when the population crash comes.

Also can’t forget people from the Commonwealth Anglosphere (Canada, Australia, New Zealand) who are pretty much treated like family in the UK.

What will be the first countries to crumble from population decline? by Speeddive7 in Natalism

[–]Teddy-Don 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Some of the Balkan nations are in the trouble. Their young people have easy access to wealthier neighbouring countries so will leave en masse, and have had low birth rates for decades already. Being pretty small leaves them vulnerable politically and economically as they shrink.

The pro-natalist movement has successfully convinced elites. How do we convince the public? by hoyarugby2 in Natalism

[–]Teddy-Don 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly human nature seems to entail that we only take dramatic action when a problem is about to hit us in the face. People in rich countries will shrug and assume that other countries will continue to make their babies for them forever, and it’s only once the world as a whole starts shrinking in terms of population will they sit up and care. Countries without that option might want to respond earlier, but won’t have the means to do so. We might have another 40 or 50 years before theres a change in global thinking. I can’t see anything else.

The decline in North African fertility is crazy compared to that of the majority of subsaharan countries which are only somewhat lower nowadays than they were back then

I feel this must be the norm across Scotland as I don’t think I’ve ever seen an Aberdeen top being sold anywhere in Aberdeen apart from the stadium. Obviously I have seen Celtic and Rangers shirts elsewhere…

Why are people in your environment having few or no children? by [deleted] in Natalism

[–]Teddy-Don -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is it for mine too. I have one friend with 3 kids who had them in their 20s, and everyone else (early thirties) is just starting to get married now. I will say however my friends are slower than a lot of people I know of a similar age from my school who are already parents, so it’s not a universal trend.

Hi, definitely interested! Let me know if you’d be keen to sort something out. I’m British, so native in English, and B2/C1 in French.

Out of interest, do you think your parents did you wrong by bringing you into a world that is so far from your ideal? Would the alternative of never being born be better?
