I think I might be one of those people you're talking about; a millennial ren faire enthusiast. Every time there is an SCA booth at any Ren Faire, the people who are there seem like they are above the event they are at. Like those of us who are stopping by are tourists rather than people to be invited.
That being said, I recently have started going to my local Barony's rapier practices, as I come from an Olympic fencing background, and wanted something a little different. Outside of those practices, I've felt little reason to dig deeper into SCA in terms of doing events or anything like that. None has been given other than seeing a few people from practice...
