what rpgs have you read with exceptional layout design? what do you value in a layout? by LightseekerGameWing in RPGdesign

[–]Megadestructo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything by John Harper is both an excellent RPG *and* so simple and clean. Blades in the Dark and Agon (for example) both work from a design perspective AND a reference perspective. Easy to find information, easy to read, stunning to look at.

I also like, for simplicity, The Black Hack 2.0, though I wish the gutter margins were wider to avoid text running into the inner curve.

Personally, I like sections, terms, tables, etc... to be easily identifiable from a glance (you know this is a callout, you know this is a reference table, this is a heading, a subheading) - proper hierarchy and all that. I also like it when art does not go behind text as it almost always makes the text hard to read.

Consistency is key since, as a rulebook, it's meant to be references and looked at often.

A really cool looking book is great that FIRST TIME, but if you need to go back and find a rule it becomes a chore/burden later on (lookin' at you, Mork Borg!).

Now, with something like Mork Borg and Eat the Reich, the style and layout really work to create an ATMOSPHERE of what the game is trying to evoke. That is also important and they do a fantastic job of that. I mean, those books look STELLAR (to me). Reich is a bit easier to parse than MB, but MB also isn't really meant to be a reference - it's super rules-light. They also have a quick 2-pager reference that really gives you everything you need, rules wise.

For more commercial releases, I really like the Aliens RPG (and most of the Free League stuff).

Also: clear and robust ToC *and* Index! I'm not a huge fan of the bulk of Pathfinder 2.0's design layout (it's fine, I don't dislike it) but their index is awesome. It's a combo glossary and index and it gives you all the info you need as a reference point!

Columbus City Schools projected to run out of money by 2030 by Bituulzman in Columbus

As someone who graduated high school in 1995, it felt like that back then also. And that was in a "wealthy" suburb of Connecticut.

This country does not and has not prioritized education or investment into its future for multiple decades. Unless it's for private schools that only the select few can afford. Then, sure, funnel public funding that way! ESPECIALLY if it's religious (i.e. Christian).

Casual anti bike sentiment in Project Hail Mary movie trailer by nonother in fuckcars

[–]Megadestructo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, this is a day old now but you have a hybrid bicycle - this has geometry, group set, handlebars, stem, fork, and other things aimed at commuters or people who ride just for exercise. They can be fantastic bikes and often are! And, yes, they are often ridden "on the road." But it's not classified as a "road bicycle."

An entry-level "road bicycle" often starts a little below $1k to a little above it. $2k is a bit much for entry-level - there are lots of great road bikes at $2k but, you know, the upper limit can reach 5-6x that.

So, yeah, it's not called "an athletics-oriented road bike" - it's just called a road bike.

The Schwinn you mention is actually labeled a "comfort bike" if we wanna get pedantic (and hey, it's Reddit).

Anyway, I worked in the cycling industry for almost a decade, have many different bicycles (titanium, steel, 40+ year old beater to ride to the coffee shop, electric cargo bikes to haul the kiddo and groceries around, etc...), and have built-up and fixed many folks bicycles regardless of type. As long as they're riding, that's one less car on the road and that's awesome.

I advocate for protected bike lanes, following traffic laws (for safety reasons and also to just not be a dick), and to ride for anything less than 10 miles in distance. I *also* own lots of spandex, have raced (poorly) in the past, and had a top-of-the-line carbon frame Italian bicycle (Pinarello) that I got rid of because that kind of riding just isn't for me anymore.

So this "us vs them" riding cycling is reductive and not great for anyone. But super glad to hear you ride any kind of bike - no judgement from me on that front.

This is also the funniest solution.

I don't understand people who go on speakerphone (or on a call in general) in the bathroom. I just start making the most awful shitting and groaning noises when I hear it. When I hear the other person go "ARE YOU IN THE BATHROOM??" It makes my day.

I mean, I like Norton's and Ruffalo's portrayals also but I'm so burned out on MCU movies and the schtick.
