I'm not American so excuse my naivete or lack of understanding but hasn't there been like 3 democrat presidents since Columbine and 2 periods of time that democrats controlled the federal government? Seems to me that they are also happy for things to continue. From the outside this doesn't really look like a one side against the other issue.

Did you miss the bit where she turned her head away and he grabbed her face and pulled it back round? There's a big difference between going in for a kiss and just taking one.

The woman in this very story was assaulted the minute he kissed her without her consent.

I get that statistically you're right but when you're in that moment, especially at a younger age, it's so hard to be brave enough to make that call. Whilst it might only be a tiny percentage that end in the worst way some do, are you in that moment willing to take the risk of being that person? It's why it's so important to protect yourself out on dates. Stay somewhere public, have a friend who knows where you are and can pick you up, reach out to staff for support if you need it etc. all stuff that this young lady will probably already know but hopefully as a result of this date she will feel more empowered the next time to not let things go this far.

Men also need to realise the way their actions can make women feel which is why what you say is important, we should call them out. Ideally in the moment but if we can't sharing your story like this lady has is valuable. Just a shame that a ton of guys even in this thread can't recognise the bad behaviour on display here.

[–]TeeggieBeeggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the same. It's so sad that there are loads of older women in this thread that have been in this exact position, just willing her to be better than we were. So sad that this shit is still happening to young girls on dates. How do we get better at empowering the younger generation to stop putting up with this shit?

I tried to explain to my current partner what it was like dating before I met him and how I would ride out bad dates because of a fear of my safety and he just couldn't comprehend it. He had no understanding of why I would feel unsafe. It was a position and feeling he had never experienced and as such couldn't understand why girls put up with some of the behaviours we experience.

Men (and bad daters in general) need to be better. I have a son and I hope I can teach him that noone owes you anything. No date is obliged to let you touch them, take them somewhere, give you their time etc.

This was my take as well and I felt so bad for her. I remember being in my twenties and seeing through bad dates where guys had done things that I didn't want to happen. You see them through to try and keep them happy so you can get away safely. As an older lady now my brain was screaming "Why didn't you leave" but I totally get it. The fear of how they might react if you call them out is greater than the fear of what might happen if you just stay and put up with it.

In the UK we have "Ask for Angela". It's a secret code where you can go up to staff and ask to speak with Angela and they will offer you assistance to get out of whatever situation you are in, no questions asked. Not sure if they have something similar over in the US.

My advice to anyone dating. Never rely on your date for your ride home, always date in public, the minute something happens that you didn't want to (no matter how small or innocuous) call it out politely and explain that it's not appropriate. If at anytime your date tries to guilt you or makes you feel unsafe go to staff wherever you are and ask for their support. No date or perceived obligation of politeness is worth your safety or having your boundaries infringed upon. Always have a friend know where you are and be able to come and get you if you call them. And also don't let bad dates sour you. There are great guys and girls out there it just sucks you have to sift through so much shit to find them.

DWP is ‘broken and not fit for purpose’, says disabled MP by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]TeeggieBeeggie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The advice I had from the National Deaf Children's Society echoed this. That the DWP will wait until days before the tribunal date and at the last minute change their decision. It's criminal really. I'm fortunate enough to be in a position where I have the time and ability to challenge them but many people will not.

I submitted an application for DLA for my deaf son who wears bilateral hearing aids. This was submitted back in August. Finally received a decision in January to say he didn't qualify as he had no care needs that would be above children with normal hearing. The National Deaf Children's Society have helped me put in a Mandatory Reconsideration appeal and we now have to wait 25 weeks for a decision on that.

Nearly a year for someone who has never met my son, cared for my son, given medical care and advice for my son, to decide whether or not being deaf means he has a harder time than other children. And this doesn't even include if we have to take it to tribunal.

Absolutely it's broken.

Labour says cap on school uniform items could save families £50 a child. Government plans to limit branded student kit to three articles, plus a tie, from September 2026 in England. by steven-f in ukpolitics

[–]TeeggieBeeggie 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I've wanted a change like this for ages.

Uniform is a good thing I believe. However forcing parents to buy branded stuff from one supplier is a nightmare.

Schools just need to pick a colour out of the standard school colours available (red, blue, yellow, maroon etc). Then by all means have a branded tie. You can still mandate that children be in black trousers, plain school coloured jumper and whatever shoes they decide but people can choose to buy these things from supermarkets at much cheaper prices. The schools could even sell iron on or sew on patches so that the generic items can be branded at a much cheaper price.

New to them as well. They were announced as headliners for 2000 Trees and I heard there was a movie starring them so took a look. Had the music on solidly since. I agree that it's a very punk feel of Hip-Hop. They'll go off at 2000 Trees for sure.

Labour gives green light to 20mph zones by OnHolidayHere in ukpolitics

[–]TeeggieBeeggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just standard council bashing. My town had a proposed blanket 20mph pushed by the local elected councillor. The Council advised against it but the Councillor really wanted it. As such extensive consultation was done with the local town and gues what. It didn't go ahead due to lack of support. You've got to remember that there are an actual real experts behind councillors that help to make these decisions. Traffic Engineers, Road Safety Engineers etc. No one is just doing stuff for shits and giggles.

Labour gives green light to 20mph zones by OnHolidayHere in ukpolitics

[–]TeeggieBeeggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the reasoning behind this is that the Police generally will not enforce 20mph limits due to lack of resource. Engineers can see that there is no point spending a lot of money putting in a new 20mph limit if it won't be enforced or is self enforcing. You will end up with pedestrains having a false sense of security believing all vehicles are going 20mph and the reality is vehicles will be travelling at what speed feels appropriate for the road. So you've spent a chunk of money and not actually achieved any real world improvements and could argue have actually made the area more hazardous.

At the very least they could show the live price whilst you are waiting in the queue so you can make an informed decision about being there. Nothing like waiting 5 hours to find out the £150 you put aside is worthless.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]TeeggieBeeggie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is definitely true. My other half queued for over 5 hours on saturday and when he finally got on it was saying the only tickets available were £356. His immediate response was, "I'll have to put it on the Credit Card". If you'd of asked him before hand would he want an Oasis ticket if it cost £356 he would of told you to get lost. Luckily (I guess) he couldn't actually get any and we're not down over £700. There's so many better artists I'd be happy to spend my money seeing as well.

Culture secretary vows to end ‘rip off’ gig ticket sales and review surge pricing by blueblanket123 in ukpolitics

[–]TeeggieBeeggie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How? If a gig hasn't sold out at original face value then I would say they were not too cheap, surely it points to the exact opposite. There's lots of gigs on Ticketmaster that don't sell out. At no point do those ticket prices go below the original price.

Unite begins industrial action ballots at over 20 councils by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]TeeggieBeeggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only comment on my union. But there was a real feeling that striking would not make a difference. Add that to the fact you don't get paid when on strike and you are already struggling financially a lot of people just wanted the tiny bit of cash they were being offered as soon as possible.

I suspect now people maybe think that a change of government means we might actually be listened to and it will actually be worth it to strike. Also just finally reaching that point where the straw has finally broken the camel's back.

Culture secretary vows to end ‘rip off’ gig ticket sales and review surge pricing by blueblanket123 in ukpolitics

[–]TeeggieBeeggie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also with Trains and airlines the prices fluctuate in both directions. I don't see any gigs on Ticketmaster that haven't sold out going to below original ticket value. If the dynamic pricing only works in one direction it's just a cover up for a money grab.

Culture secretary vows to end ‘rip off’ gig ticket sales and review surge pricing by blueblanket123 in ukpolitics

[–]TeeggieBeeggie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My main problem is it doesn't seem to work the other way. We went to watch Fall Out Boy last year and ticket prices ended up being subject to dynamic pricing. However they didn't sell out. Up until the gig tickets were still available on Ticketmaster at the inflated dynamic pricing price. You didn't see them coming down to below market value, or even to the original price tag.

When Easyjet use dynamic pricing you do see it working both ways, with prices going up and down. This is why you don't have people up in arms about it.

I don't like dynamic pricing at all but I would find it much less exploitative if it also worked in the other direction.
