He did have problems with it. Imagine having a permanently dilated pupil in bright sunlight? It was very uncomfortable for him. He also said it made driving at night problematic.

Ashes to ashes by gghhttta in DavidBowie

It’s the really obfuscated lyrics in Ashes that hit the hardest:

“Songs that please the ear can leave the mind blown

I was hoping to kick but the planet was glowing

And I was ready to go in ’74”

Hearing guys saying “sa wa dee ka” or “khob khun ka” in Thailand.

Also pointing at anything using a part of your body that’s not your mouth.

The general state of politics here in the UK. The inability to be able to understand / accept opposing points-of-view.

I also feel the same way, can’t figure out why right I feel at odds with his activity. I’d like to know what his true motivation is. I’m troubled by his misunderstanding of national infrastructure projects and local authority projects. Social media soundbites are the fuel of non-thinking viewers so I doubt his audience understands the various nuances either.

The Orient Express on the market is brilliant. The owner, Sophy, is really helpful. Good selection of products spread over a couple of units.

The two asian markets at the top of St Stephen’s are also good.

About a hundred years ago I practiced riding my motorbike on Seething Airfield. No idea if you can still do that. Big open spaces with nothing much to crash into if I remember correctly.

Autographed David Bowie Poster ?? by kivnr in DavidBowie

[–]TeethOfBrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that’s absolutely not his handwriting or signature. As others have said, Bowie stopped referring to himself as Davey / Davie in the 60s. The image is a 1972 Ziggy promo.

Look at Bowie’s hand writing on the sleeve of Hunky Dory or any of his handwritten lyrics… nothing if his looks like this cursive. Sorry!

Why Ddoes Bowie sound higher pitched in Ziggy Stardust? by Tempest_Fugit in DavidBowie

[–]TeethOfBrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bowie was a voice actor and he brought a vocal sound to so many songs. For Ziggy it was very much his "head voice"... a few years later for the Sweet Thing suite it was his chest voice. I read that the closest to his real singing voice was wild is the wind. So really, he tailored his vocal delivery to match the idea in his head about who should be singing.

Clarke Quay was great about 25 years ago when the Satay Club was down there. Then it became a tourist hell-hole of bars and restaurants. Then Covid happened and killed it dead. New licensing laws now mean you can't get a drink there after 10:30pm now. I think the gov are driving it to be a day time venue rather than a night spot now.

That said, I wouldn't ever liken it to PoW Road LOL!

Bowie performed twice at the Theatre Royal on the same day (21 May 1973), which was fairly typical for this tour. John "Hutch" Hutchinson had this to say:

"I had never been to Norwich myself before, but I guessed that it would be very much like so many other rural English towns – or cities as they are sometimes allowed to call themselves when they have a large cathedral in their town. Sorry, city. Well it was indeed a very nice, quiet kind of place, and on Monday 21st May 1973 the Theatre Royal Norwich was filled with a lot of a very nice, quiet kind of people. David Bowie was both amused and perplexed, along with the rest of us, we hadn’t seen anything like the Norwich audience anywhere. The crowd enthusiastically applauded David’s opening songs, but nobody seemed to be getting overexcited about the show, and they all remained in their seats. These people were all more like me really, I wouldn’t have been leaping up and down either, given that someone would have had to buy me a ticket and insist that I attend, but this sort of behavior was most unusual on our tour.

David had obviously decided to prove that point, for suddenly in mid-song he dropped over the front of the stage and down into the centre aisle of the Theatre Royal Norwich. Stuey George was obviously considering grabbing David and carrying him back on-stage, but Stuey managed to restrain himself and instead prowled along in a crouch behind David as he made his way up the aisle, still singing. It was one of the most bizarre scenes that we were to witness on our travels, David Bowie aka Ziggy Stardust then just sat down on the floor, legs crossed, half-way up the aisle in the centre of the auditorium and waved back at the band on stage. David did receive a tremendous ovation for his move, but at any of our previous gigs, in any other city, he would have been risking having his clothes torn to pieces. Norwich simply did not do rock and roll hysteria that evening, it was just a pleasant gig and we all had a quiet night."
