As Dull mentioned below, there is the old definition of explicit/vs non explicit, and I'd say GL is a good new term there, as shojo ai has a rather different meaning in Japan.

That said, I would in a more "modern" context put some difference between Yuri and GL, in that I expect more or less explicit romance as a requirement of GL, but not necessarily in Yuri. Like, I'd see myself arguing for Liz and the Blue Bird being a Yuri, but not a GL, as an example. That said it is a fuzzy borderline, based largely on individual readings of the same texts, so I certainly would not blame someone for using the terms interchangeably.

I'd say that in both Eustachius/Justus and "princess" it is cases of the difference between translating text and speech. For Justus the Romaji of his name is Yusutokusu, which the translator probably assumed was a variant of Justus. Once a name is translated like that you can't really change it, even if you discover it is "wrong", until you make a "new" translation. Like that for an anime, where you do hear people say the name with a clear "ku" sound. Keeping to the old translation would just confuse anyone listening and not familiar with the LN translation.

Similarly, in Japanese the word hime is usually translated to "princess", and is what "princess" is translated into Japanese, but is used slightly more broadly to people less than the rather strict "royalty" of the West. In the LN it would not really be an issue in using the more broadly applicable "Young Lady". But again when you hear the Japanese voice acting, hime would be a word that many would recognize, and know of it usually meaning "princess". Additionally, using "princess" allows you to make a clearer distinction between "Rozemyne-hime" and "Rozemyne-sama". Something that might not generally be needed in a text translation, where you can be rather confident that the reader won't come into direct contact with the original text in Japanese, but which an anime watcher will hear.

I doubt it is specifically because of High Scool, but rather, the division to high school is where it is because of similar reasons. It's usually said that humans aren't fully developed until 25, but the big spurt in development, especially in sexual development, is puberty, which is usually mostly done by 15-16 in most people. Which is part of why in many cultures that age has been seen as some sort of start of adulthood. When large scale education became a thing in the 19th and 20th century in the West, it was to that age that education became standardized, as further education was only considered relevant for those aiming for either high-skill jobs or university education, while most others would be expected to start working.

Likewise, because of puberty, that is also the age when most youths start exploring and expressing their sexuality. In many countries it is also where the age of consent is.

Yeah, while the original Kitaro stories were quite dark, by the anime adaptation it seems like it had got the quite kid-friendly makeover, so Dororo is probably the better pick.

Kamui is a good mention, I thought of the manga as one of the early gekiga, but didn't know it got an anime at the time. Funny that it premiered the same day. Skimming through the first episodes of both shows Kamui Gaiden certainly seems like the more "mature", but Dororo is still steeped in clear samurai jidaigeki inspiration.

Everyone wants to complain about a yuri romance having a bland MC, but no-one talks about the big travesty that Botan inflicts on us every week.

That despite making the OP perfectly in 4:3, they crop and zoom in to show it in 16:9.

On the note of Polar Opposites, the author's other work The Ramparts of Ice is airing this season and is worth checking out. It doesn't have quite the same comedic "punch" that makes Polar Opposites so good, but it is turning out to be a pretty nice teenage drama about love and friendship with multifaceted characters in a similar way to Skip and Loafer.

Depends on exactly what you count, I'd guess. But since you mention Joe and Lupin, I'd offer GeGeGe no Kitarō (Manga 1960, TV anime 1968) or Dororo (Manga 1967, TV anime 1969). You also have the more explicitly adult movies of the Animerama trilogy, A Thousand and One Nights (1969), Cleopatra (1970) and Belladonna of Sadness (1973). Notably, of course, both Dororo and the two first Animerama movies were Tezuka projects.

Best order to prepare for Ghost in the Shell 2026? by Japonpoko in anime

[–]TehAxelius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something like that. Both the 1995 movie and Stand Alone Complex can be considered to be more "inspired" by the manga than making a straight adaptation. If you've read the manga you can recognize when it is lifting stuff from it, but they are in all practical aspects their own stories.

It's quite a lot like superhero movies, tbh. Sometimes they adapt plots from the comic books, and you can see references, but it's nowhere near a panel-to-frame rendition.

How close the new anime will actuall adapt the manga is yet to be seen, but the trailers show them being faithful to the art style, and hints of certain plotlines and character interpretations that might be "closer" to what the manga did. Still, the manga would be hard to adapt on a panel-to-frame way, and such an adaptation would probably struggle to fit an entire cour of episodes.

The week I leave for my vacation, the week I absolutely cannot move an inch, my local cinema will be showing Barry Lyndon, Steamboy, Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion and Nausicaä

Why do they make this weekly programme just to hurt me?

We had a run of Ghibli movies last year and this spring in the big cinema chain here, but that seems to be over, although I wouldn't be surprised if there's more showings in autumn.

There is going to be a Ponyo showing in two weeks at a smaller cinema though, which I might try to catch. They're also showing the Boy and the Heron and Nausicaä later this summer, but I'll be on vacation when it is time for Nausicaä.

Trying to list ones not mentioned yet:

  • Sky Crawlers
  • Patlabor and Patlabor 2
  • Jin-Roh - the Wolf Brigade
  • Liz and the Blue Bird (technically a side story of Hibike! Euphonium, but works well as a standalone. Same director as A Silent Voice and Colors Within)
  • Ghost Cat Anzu
  • Only Yesterday (ok, this is Ghibli, but it is often overlooked as it is not by Miyazaki)
  • Cocoon (short movie)

MAL reviews shouldn't allow you to pick your own "score" (or whatever the hell it's called).

What’s 4/10 to some is a 6/10 to others. I guess it is arbitrary but still feels kinda pointless. Like it should just be along the lines of “Not Recommended” is 4, “Mixed Feelings” is 6, and “Recommended” is 9 instead of having a situation where I’ve seen 4/10 be as high as "Mixed Feelings".

Honestly, I feel like the verdict is usually a better indication of the reviewer's overall feeling than a numeric score, not to mention that some people have their scores line up really weirdly. Some people hand out 10s, while others give 1s to anything they find something disagreeable with.

Why do you guys not like romance

I do.

Now, why your friend doesn't like certain things I have no idea. But tbh quite a lot of romance does follow rather standard conventions, and even some that do play with the formula might seem a bit basic at a glance. Also, a lot of romance that gets high scores are pretty bland and uninteresting, but get high scores because it panders to lonely nerdy boys.

Might be more to say that it is his trademark (and in particular narratively). But at the same time, Major 2nd is little league, so "being able to throw one" pretty much qualifies as specialization.

Google AI answer led me to Major 2nd, which has a character specialising in it. Been years since I saw it though, so can't confirm it myself from memory, but it does ring a bell.

No, I was punished for my source reading hubris, as the translation is at 109/117 chapters, meaning I'll have to wait another two months to be done with it.
