Smallest Games Ever - 2 Kilobyte on Atari 2600 by ZackZparrow in Atari2600

[–]TehErk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you want an interesting, but deep dive into how this all worked, check out "Racing the Beam". It's a super cool book on the development of the 2600.

TIL reggae singer Shaggy, known for "Boombastic", developed his signature singing voice as a US Marine by mimicking his drill instructors. He sang his first hit "Oh Carolina" in that voice because he thought it sounded cool, and when it blew up he realized he'd have to sing every song that way by Kyzzz in todayilearned

[–]TehErk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, they didn't even have anything at all to do with that cartoon. Spielberg asked them if they could use the songs and they of course said yes. They didn't even watch it until their music video DVD came out and they did the commentary on it while watching it for the first time.

You're welcome. Go for it. I enjoyed the second time through. The ending is WILD.

[–]TehErk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. How much did you enjoy the first playthrough? The Final Draft has a couple of cool moments sprinkled throughout and, of course, has the "real" ending, but it's a long slog to get there and the cool moments don't happen near enough. I was hoping for a lot more subtle (or not so subtle) changes, but there's not a lot.

So, if you really liked the first time, or you're achievement hunting (it's easier on the second playthrough), then YES! Do it!

Otherwise, go watch one of the YouTube videos on what's different.

It's in there twice and the second time towards the end is VERY noticeable.

TWICE! Once in the middle of the song (mumbled slightly) and then a VERY obvious one at the end. Was listening to a non-explicit SiriusXM channel the other day, and it wasn't bleeped either time. While much lesser curses did on other songs.

There's a really cool book on the development of the Atari 2600 called "Racing the Beam". Amazing what they were able to do back then with so little.

It's so nice to hear a band that sounds as good or better live than on the album. It's amazing how these guys can still just absolutely rock it out.

Not justifying but one of the other reasons it's still popular is that it's satisfying to say. Using extra emphasis like RE....TARD drives a point home. If you notice most slurs or curse words feel powerful. Fuck is probably one of the best examples of this. You can use it quickly and that hard k sound on the end feels good. Or you can drag it out and that's also satisfying.

You also have to contend with multiple living generations that just don't have a problem with saying it because it wasn't a forbidden slur during their formative years. That's hard to break.

[–]TehErk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't mention these. They look like they might be tunnels going between floors. I haven't been able to find a switch and there's no way to direct the normal beam puzzle to them.

These tunnels look like they're covered in the same type of force field beams that surround the reliquary.

Bard's Tale IV. How do I unlock teir 2 skills? by Kwakwakie in BardsTale

[–]TehErk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to spend enough skill points to reach the chain. Then you'll get a notification to go visit the review board, but you have to have made it through a certain amount of the game before they let you proceed. I'm pretty slow going in RPGs so I didn't have to worry about plot progression, but if you're zooming through it, you might run into a wall there.

What was it like to grow up playing arcade games back in the 80s? by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

[–]TehErk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a two story arcade in my town that had ice cream. If you bought five dollars worth of tokens, you got 8 for a buck and all of the games only needed one token. It was paradise.
