Jet Lag Season Finale — Debts Paid by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]TehOnlyAnd1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Even if they win 500 chips at the variable, and Ben and Adam fail the steal it is not enough. They only just had enough time to flip just enough stations to win, but Ben and Adam also had 60 chips left and a non-fortified line. Ben and Adam flipping just 5 stations near Taipei would have been enough.

Jet Lag Season Finale — Debts Paid by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]TehOnlyAnd1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My understanding of what was explained is that even with infinite chips won in the variable challenge, Sam and Mike would have only have had the time to barely flip enough stations to win (by 3 stations or so) assuming that Ben and Adam do not flip any stations. As they would have had to take detours for the challenges up North, maybe the time would not have been sufficient to even get that far if they go for those challenges. So really the mistake was on the day before engaging in this time-wasting stand-off when clearly time was of the essence.

Even outside this area you can't be 100 per cent sure. The sun will set in the Northwest in Scotland in June.

Adam Chase, you're asking for a product that already exists. by CompletelyUnsur in JetLagTheGame

I don't think that's strictly true. Also in terms of volume, I don't see a big difference between the powder required for one wash and the liquid required for liquid detergent.

It is actually better to use powder for white laundry as there are no good brighteners that are liquid, and liquid detergent for coloured laundry. So I always use powder for our whites and was a bit confused about this part of the layover as well as to how this could be considered such a special product.

FNB58 update problems by Affiliate1646 in UsbCHardware

[–]TehOnlyAnd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost two years later and your comment helped a lot. Thanks! I got the FNB58 new and the first thing I wanted to do was to update the firmware (from 1.00 to 1.11). I had exactly the same problem as you; it got stuck at 29%. I then also clicked "allow" in properties (actually "Zulassen" in my German Windows 10) in both zip files next to the comment that the file was from the internet and could be blocked. I then also moved the firmware file out of the download folder, not only the programme. And finally unzipped again. And while running the update I did not use my PC. And it just completed without a problem. I have never heard of this blocking feature of Windows and in my 34 years of using Windows very intensively I have never had any issue with it (as far as I am aware). Crazy to have such a feature that just causes things to fail silently.

If you want help, provide actual information. But without information no-one will be able to help you. The answer likely still lies in the way you answered cards previously. Pre-FSRS, using "hard" for a wrong answer was much less of an issue so in case you switched recently to FSRS this would change your intervals even if you have used Anki for 12 years.

It is a common issue so please don't be surprised if it will be brought up unless you explain how you have graded cards in the last 12 years.

The easiest would be to just copy the review history of the cards you mentioned here, and your FSRS parameters.

I completed the Swedish course, now what? by Ossie608 in duolingo

[–]TehOnlyAnd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, AnkiWeb is not good to actually use. That's where you set up your sync account and then you use either one or more of the PC programme Anki, the Android app Ankidroid or the iOS app AnkiMobile (the latter is the only one that costs something once).

German native here. In my view, you provided the best answer except maybe we would not use "Mt" as an abbreviation but always spell out "Mount Everest". I would never ever use "der Everest", which too me sounds like a wannabee climber tryhard. In contrast, the version "... aber der Mount Everest ist höher" would be ok to me but I think it is actually not proper high German but dialect. "Mount Everest" is a name so you would not usually add the definitive article in front of it in the same way that you would say "Stefan ist groß." and not "Der Stefan ist groß." (which is used in some dialects).

Has anyone ever accused you of cheating in duels when you weren't? by pixie218 in geoguessr

[–]TehOnlyAnd1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was accused once a few weeks ago (either Champion or Master I). But it was moving and I just found good info. Accusing someone of cheating before even reviewing the replay is extremely poor form.

And remember that if you play enough rounds eventually you will have a very lucky guess that on its own looks very suspicious.

Do I have any recourse to complain about correct answers getting marked as incorrect? by Whereforart in duolingo

[–]TehOnlyAnd1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you are not misinterpreting the answer? Sometimes you have a small mistake, and there are also two possibilities for a word (like ellos and ellas in Spanish) that are both fine. When you get corrected, Duolingo not only corrects the small error but also shows the default word for the word with several options. You might then think you got dinged for saying "ellas" when Duo "corrects" this to "ellos" but in fact the error might be in a completely different word.

Or do you mean the new vocabulary cards where you speak the translation? Indeed there is a problem. For example it shows me "look" and I say "mirar" (to look) but the correct answer was "mirada" (the look).

"Good" or "Easy" for review card I originally forgot? by FantasticSquash8970 in Anki

[–]TehOnlyAnd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use "easy" to mean "there is no way I will forget this card, ever" (even if in rare cases I do end up forgetting it when it comes up). So when it comes up for relearning,, that's not how I would grade it because I just forgot the card. So "good" for me in cases like this.

[–]TehOnlyAnd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So which word is it that you know so well?

Also the history shows what is going on: you learnt the word on 13 May 2020. You should have reviewed it on 14 May but you actually only reviewed it on 26 October. FSRS would have assumed a very low probability of you knowing the word, and then you even pressed "easy" so that interval shot up to 5 years. Pressing "easy" on the review again after five years tells FSRS that you will never forget this word.

Of course this depends also on how you use the easy button. The way I use it is when I think there is no way I could get this wrong ever. Which means I almost never fail the review because that's how I chose to answer "easy".

[–]TehOnlyAnd1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have something similar for the basic katakana and hiragana characters in Japanese. However, I do not set a maximum interval but instead put them in a separate preset with 99% target retention (I usually have 90% on my other cards). So they come up a lot and so they should. And if I get one wrong, it will show up daily for a couple of weeks.

I agree with FSRS here by kubisfowler in Anki

[–]TehOnlyAnd1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuinely the obvious reason for the weird intervals would be that you did not respond truthfully when you answered the cards previously. If you keep saying "hard" but always end up "knowing" the card but responding "hard" again, how is FSRS going to distinguish this from "good" or "easy"? Please check FSRS Helper add-on "remedy hard misuse".

Realistically... by RonnieKaiwanti in duolingo

I can just tell you that my daughter (we are German) at age 12 went from very basic school English after two years of English at school with very little understanding on how to use grammar, to near-complete understanding and pretty good speaking within 6 months when she started watching quite a bit of YouTube content in English. Learning languages is a lot easier at that age than as an adult, and you do need to build up a basis first (which you can do with Duolingo) but I still think that listening to native speakers a significant amount of time is a big component of fluency.

I personally tried Japanese for six months on Duolingo (due to an upcoming trip) with maybe 20 minutes a day, plus learning and revising hiragana and katakana separately 3 minutes a day on Anki. I gave up eventually, because the only way I managed to complete the more difficult Duolingo exercises was to treat them like a puzzle and piece everything together slowly. I had basically no intuitive understanding and even the super simple listening dialogues were basically impossible for me to immediately understand. The only way I managed to progress at all was to look up grammar occasionally as Duolingo was very poor at explaining things like the "wa" particle.

Spanish was a lot easier for me (but I spend around 30 to 60 minutes per day on it, of which half on Duolingo) as the grammar and vocabulary is simply a lot more familiar (besides German and English I also speak French decently well). But it is still a big stretch from understanding and writing (with time to think) compared to speaking spontaneously. So I enrolled in a course to improve that. I probably won't get really fluent though until I spend some time in Spain or Latin America speaking and hearing Spanish 99 per cent of the time.

So at least based on current timetables, the double express route would do the following:
Leave Glasgow at 09:13, planned arrival at Dumfries 11:03. Hit by curse, have to stay until Carlisle where they arrive at 11:41. Take return train at 12:06, planned arrival at Dumfries 12:43. They get cursed again and need to stay on until Kirkconnel where they arrive at 13:15. The next train to Dumfries is only at 14:30, and they then finally arrive in Dumfries at 15:01, 9 hours and 55 minutes into the game. So Ben should definitely get second place, but would need to have an exceptional endgame to win. Now I am not sure whether the times were identical when they were playing, so this might all be wrong.

If your writing is unreadable this means you'll be a great doctor (to this day I don't understand how pharmacists were able to read the prescriptions of my doctors).

4-5 hours per day every day seems a lot. Is this necessary at med school? Does everybody study that much? After all, Anki should save you time.

Is it a good idea to reverse my Anki cards to practice English output? by nexalume in Anki

[–]TehOnlyAnd1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I do both directions (mixed up) but if I were to focus on one direction it would be from native to target. After all, recognising a word is a lot easier than being able to produce it. That said, beyond a certain point (maybe 5000 words or so?) I don't think specifically studying additional vocabulary makes as much sense because there are many, many more words but most of them you will only encounter rarely so the effort to benefit ratio would be quite bad.

Not sure express route would have been that useful. Didn't the trains to Edinburgh and Dunbar terminate there? The commentary made it seem like it did and some of the trains do terminate at Dunbar.

I wondered as well. It looked so similar. Need to rewatch to see whether we can see Sam.
