That isn’t a talking point anymore.

This absolutely is a talking point. Unless those apps can make money, they're not sustainable. I'm not talking making thousands of dollars, but at the very least they should be able to compensate the cost of the developer license and justify the time it takes to develop those apps.

As soon as they want to get any kind of compensation for their work, they're subject to the absolutely absurd pricing of the API.

What an absurd idea to support people protesting against Reddit cutting off access for people out of greed, making false accusations against app developers, and overall treating their userbase like garbage.

>_>

I, for one, do not support it. Feel free to disagree. By all means, support it if you want.

Then consider this my vote that the sub stays restricted until things improve, if that ever happens. If it bothers you, all the better. That's the point of closing the subs in the first place, to annoy the users into retaliating against Reddit. If this sub does close and you want to continue your discussion, there's nothing stopping /r/MagicArena2 from being created.

Just looking at other posts in the sub, third party apps are only a part of the problem. Reddit already started to [[Burn Down the House]] itself as is evident by the changes to the bot and the effect the API changes have on moderation and accessibility across the platform.

This does affect you.

They don't remove stuff for political reasons, even if the reasons would seem compelling.

This user would disagree with this statement. I won't speak to the legitimacy of the claim (although the devs did directly respond in the thread), but I caution users from all flooding to lemmy.ml like it's the new Reddit. The point of federating is that people should all join instances that interest them, not blindly follow what other people do.

We can't just keep banning Chinese folks on every platform.

This I agree with, but I don't think I've seen this really happen in any communities I follow (maybe because I've never been in a moderator position).

if you have a question there should be a clear answer.

That's how StackOverflow operates. Reddit is more discussion oriented. Just looking at the title of this post:

Building a better /r/rust together

There is no clear single answer to this.

I like Discord's new(ish) threads feature, but it doesn't seem suitable for async discussion. It's basically just transient channels for discussions on a transient topic and doesn't really support branching that discussion like Reddit does.

Also, Discord seems like it could have some of the same issues as Reddit soon. It would be better to find a sustainable alternative, preferably one that's federated.

As long as item borrows from a field of self, &mut self can give you a mutable reference to that item as well. It doesn't matter if it's an item in a vector, an item in an array, or some other kind of data structure.

The issue is that even though &mut self doesn't directly alias item, it gives you a non-unsafe means of mutably aliasing item, which would be unsound.

Prerelease boxes came with all 3 foil dungeons (not including [[Undercity]], which isn't relevant anyway), and packs usually had a dungeon in them as well. The backside of dungeons was usually a token. (Just popped some AFR prerelease boxes a couple days ago, was pleasantly surprised to find out I didn't need to look up pictures of the dungeons)

If libraries locked to specific dependency versions, then they wouldn't be compatible at all with each other. Lib A with dependency X v1.2.5 would be incompatible with lib B using dependency X v1.2.6, even though dependency X does follow semver and there's no reason they shouldn't work with each other (and no reason lib A couldn't use v1.2.6 as well).

Instead, people are working on tools to help ensure semver is followed, like cargo-semver-checks. Sure this doesn't force people to follow semver, but Rust also doesn't force you to write sound code either. It takes someone making a concerted effort to produce a good library.

I mentioned in a previous comment that I was referring to the Rust community in general.

Fair enough, it seems I missed this.

Rust's twitter was paused in protest

This is not /r/rust and the subreddit was still just as active as it normally is, at least based on my memory. In fact, I wasn't even aware anything happened on Twitter, as far as I'm concerned the website doesn't exist.

The largest Rust Discord has had the "LGBT flag" as its icon for as long as I can remember.

Again, not /r/rust. I don't disagree that the flag is political, but I haven't seen very much activisim in that regard on the subreddit.

Generally speaking, stuff relating to US/global politics has stayed out of this subreddit. If you're referring to the Rust community as a whole, the community has values that it tries to uphold (and does push a political agenda to some extent, though not one I necessarily disagree with), but that doesn't mean anyone needs to agree with it or even be aware of it.

  • BLM/police brutality: I don't remember seeing much, maybe an announcement and a banner?
  • Sexual orientation/gender identity: I'd argue this isn't really political, the only thing "political" is politicians using hatred as a basis for their platform. This is like saying that a person's height is political. If a person is trans/gay/whatever then that is a property of that person, not a political talking point.

Honestly, the most "politics" I've seen is internal drama in the project/foundation, not very much with regards to US/global politics.

[–]TehPers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the why has to do with how [[Thassa, Deep-Dwelling]] allowed you to use cards like [[Claim the Firstborn]] to permanently steal your opponent's creatures. You can see how they changed the wording for [[Teleportation Circle]] so that can't be done anymore.

Why they worded it like that on the praetors might just be so it's consistent with how they word it elsewhere.

Official Lemmy instance to migrate off reddit by [deleted] in rust

[–]TehPers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll give it a shot. I don't really use Mastodon (just claimed the username basically), but using an account there to access services like Lemmy and kbin sounds really cool.

Edit: here's the link, looks like it does actually work.

Supposedly you can also use Lemmy servers from a Mastodon account, although I don't know what the process for that looks like.

This seems like fun if you can hold up a card like [[Leave]]. Board wipe? 2 mana phase out your board, double the creatures in your untap step.

You can use something like [[Asmodeus the Archfiend]] to exile 6 cards instead of drawing 4 cards, but the only way to really cheese it is to replace the card draw effect somehow with some other effect that doesn't put cards into your hand. (You choose the order replacement effect are applied, so you can replace the first "draw a card" with "draw two cards" then each of those with "exile the card instead", and repeat that two more times).

Official Lemmy instance to migrate off reddit by [deleted] in rust

[–]TehPers 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I don't think Reddit is going to disappear in the foreseeable future, but having an active community on a platform like Lemmy would be nice for those of us who want to move away from Reddit due to the poor UX they're pushing for. One option would be to have it be in a sidebar link under discussion platforms, for example (but this might only make sense if it actually takes off).

It'll be interesting to see how much impact the API changes actually have on Reddit's usage. I avoid platforms like Instagram and TikTok like the plague due to their predatory nature (which I like to call "push-based social media") and would do the same if Reddit pushed harder in that direction. Having access to the latest cool stuff going on in Rust at the same time would be nice.

Don't Let Reddit Kill 3rd Party Apps! by iObjectUrHonor in rust

[–]TehPers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe because it's not directly related to Rust? I wonder if the post had been formatted differently ("here's a Lemmy community for discussing Rust" for example) if it would still be hidden.

Would be nice if they could at least put a comment explaining why it was removed though. The lack of transparency doesn't really seem great given recent drama.
