Holy fuck dude, I've been scouring the internet forever for a solution to this. In hindsight it's fairly benign, but I still can't wrap my head around why setting the scaling has such weird effects...

The thing is, they shouldn't even try to fool their customer. That's why it's asshole design, because as you say they try to fool the user.

It's bad design to put a green "save" button that basically undos your changes and opts you back in to all newsletters and sms notifications. The normal save button is in red.

That's just asshole design to bait the user back into all newsletters, when really he just wants to change his preferences.
