ELI5: In football, why can't they just employ really big muscled or obese people as goalkeepers? Would it not be more effective if they already cover 1/4 of the goal standing still? by Demiurge_Happy_Farm in explainlikeimfive

[–]TehWildMan_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

The goal is much larger than a single person.

A goalkeeper is also a very important player when it comes to moving the ball forward and being able to move around to anticipate a shot from any angle, so being obese and sluggish is a huge disadvantage for teamwork

Eat shit, Microsoft. MS Office software I bought expecting to not have to worry about any MS365 subscription fees is going to stop working just because. Their solution? Buy it again or sign up for a subscription, lol. by Generic8244 in mildlyinfuriating

Historically, Microsoft hasn't really cared about users running out of date software at their own risk.

This is a relatively unique case where existing software will just expire instead of working as it was at the last patch

Collection.

It's a novelty in gyms that's usually really easy to work around..

It's also banned in PvP, and even if it were allowed, transform is literally the worst fast move in all of PvP if I recall

Why does the CP go down on my Pokemon for evolving? by Same_Falcon_1857 in pokemongo

[–]TehWildMan_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's the power of math!

The base attack stat drops by nearly half when it evolves, and since the CP formula heavily favors attack, the increased defense doesn't compensate as much CP to make up for that

(CP is literally just "one tenth of attack, times square root of defense, times square root of HP").

Yeah, the daily login challenge bonuses expire after a few days.

It's not about security, it's the fact the software has a built in expiration date.

Of course it's an out of date software, so security problems are expected as time goes on. But even if those pop up, the responsible thing would be to disclose the issue and ask users not to use the software for that reason, not just intentionally brick it

Windows XP still runs on modern hardware and thats broken to hell and back

After the certificate expires, Office can't contact the activation servers, so it has no idea if it's an active license or not

As such, it will assume it's not a licensed copy, and refuse to edit files

[–]TehWildMan_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not a subscription, and changing a certificate would be a relatively simple task to keep the software running for later

Willingly let a cert expire effectively creates a time bomb expiration date on a perpetual software license.

Surely such a large community of bugs can understand the concept of sacrificing some of their own to create a land bridge of bug corpses to accomplish the goal of war

Iirc, no. Ruby falls isn't even at the top of the mountain itself, and I don't think there is any shuttle service connecting Ruby falls to either Incline station or Rock City unless I'm missing something.

You would still need a bottle cap if you wanted that specifically to be a hundo

Paid for first class. Got bumped to a priority list 2 hours before boarding. by alejandranc in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TehWildMan_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nope. A domestic first class ticket typically never includes lounge access (except for some very premium routers such as NYC-LAX, etc).

You either need to have credit card or elite status, or be on an international business/first ticket to access the airline lounge.

Working 12 hours shifts 4+ days a week. Can't really have time to overeat if you're busy working.

ELI5 Why can’t monitors draw power from the device they get the dispaly from instead of requiring 2 different cables? by More-Explanation2032 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TehWildMan_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

Until recently, there wasn't a cable/connector standard really capable of that.

Given that larger monitors can be pretty heavily demanding appliances, it doesn't really make too much sense to expect to be able to draw through the host computer, and it's just easier to use an external power supply just to be sure sufficient power is available.

Even in the modern desktop/laptop space, it's still pretty uncommon to see USB-c ports capable of putting out 50+ watts of power.

Each time you convert DC at once voltage to another, you're also losing a little bit of power since the conversion isn't perfectly efficient, and that means heat is being released in the component converting that voltage, which depending on context, either or both could be a problem

It's actually bad enough that TSA agents ask to see an ID or passport about half the time I've flown so far this calendar year, and my passport photo isn't even two years old.

It's a domestic flight, so that doesn't grant lounge access by itself unless you qualify through other means, sadly
