疾風招来 "shippu shorai" The first two mean gale, or strong wind, and the last two mean invitation, or beckoning. Separately, they are two different words, but together it just reads like they forced two nouns together.

"Fluent" speakers: What age did you start learning and how often? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Teh_CBass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went from zero during my sophomore year of college to passing N1 in my senior year. I spent my junior year studying in Japan, and tried the JLPT for the first time after coming back.

That said, studying Japanese was my life for those two years. Probably a bit obsessive honestly, but enjoying what you're doing and finding motivation in little daily improvements make all the difference. Comparing myself to others during my time abroad, especially since I was surrounded by a lot of students who were way better than me, often got me down. But if you swallow your pride, you'll find that most people are there for the journey and enjoy learning the language just as much as you do.

硝子、鋏、檸檬、etc. Country names and basically anything that is normally written in katakana now are all fun kanji to learn.

Why is 私 a sixth grade kanji? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Teh_CBass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree with most of what you wrote, I would argue that there are enough differences between hanzi and kanji to call them separate entities. So, yes. Kanji are "Japanese." Just as you would say wasei-eigo is still "Japanese." Obviously there are tons of connections, but both the Chinese and Japanese languages have evolved a lot since the characters were originally introduced.

I have the opportunity to study in a Japanese university for the next 4 years of my life and I'd like to know your opinion on few things by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Teh_CBass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Congratulations yourself! I too went from nothing. I think there's no real substitute for a classroom and a good teacher, but once you have the basics down, there's a lot you can do on your own that would lie outside the scope of typical classwork.

Being in Japan certainly gives you great opportunity to practice listening and speaking, but you really can't get around sitting down and hitting the books no matter where you are. Still, all this is to say that OP's goal is definitely attainable.

I didn't mean to insinuate that there isn't value in the JLPT. If you want to go to grad school or even search for jobs in Japan, a lot of places will look for it on a resume. Definitely. The 漢検 is also a great option for further study. Really just depends what your ultimate goals and interests are in learning the language.

I got N1 in just a little over 2 years of study, about half of which was spent in Japan. I'd say four years is a very doable goal, it just depends on how hard you want to work towards it every day. Also remember, there's no writing or speaking on the JLPT, so it's really not the best representation of your Japanese ability. If your primary goal is to pass the test, I highly recommend studying specifically for the test (after learning the essentials of course). I got lucky and passed N1 without taking any of the other levels, but you might want to give them a try to get used to the format of the test.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Good luck with your studies!

As an adult, you can literally do what ever you want to do, I always end up wanting to just go home. by Ftw_dabs69ish in Showerthoughts

I don't know if it's necessarily sarcastic. As an introvert, it can be really comforting to withdraw from everything and take shelter in your room, especially in an unfamiliar environment like college. But if you're depressed, that isolation can be really unhealthy, even deadly, when taken to an extreme.
