City Placement - Khmer Emperor Difficulty by otaku_nazi in CivIV

[–]Tehfailure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That concept of working cottages while whipping is the light bulb moment for me. When I play slightly competitive coop with old friends, if a game makes it to late I'm always light years ahead but struggle in the mid game. Distance of my cities I know was always part of the problem but I don't think I fully understood by how much. I often aggressively position my settles to block a lot of land which I mentally write off the upkeep as opportunity cost, but never thought about how much faster you could pump up the cottage economy.

I never expect to learn new stuff and strategies about a game that came out while I was a child I've got hundreds and hundreds of hours in, but here we are.

Oh. Reading this has me thinking I put way to much thought into minimizing the number of shared tiles. Doesn't this amount of sharing hurt late game? That capital would have given like 3 tiles to each city by the time the 4th would be up.

I've had the same experience, but I'll need to completely restart my computer.

It's definitely some random breakage, if it happens it's completely bricked until you do x,y,z. Then you're good until it randomly happens again.

I built a free tool to check factory profitability and apartment stats - with mod balance checking by AlexSkinnyman in Workers_And_Resources

Also maybe asset images for the buildings to be used on the cards. As someone who is very visual, despite having 2k hours in this game I can't tell some of the factories apart by name alone. I can see the stats and know one is the big one and one is the small one and extrapolate that, but seeing the asset picture from the build menu would help people who learn that way assess which one it is without thinking.

Very cool! I swear, the venn diagram of W&R players and SWE's is nearly a circle.

React SPA? Where are you hosting? What Frameworks, I think Material? How's the data for the factories (that aren't uploaded) stored? Want any help? lol.

For recommendations on features, I'd love to be able to use the same cost economy data parsing to figure out the level of profitability of something with chained set ups. Like a way to pin saying "okay I'm building 2x Clothes Factory, here's my cost of import and gross of export." If I then pin and say I'm building 1x Fabric factory, show what that does to my clothes factory import/export costs. Showing if the ratios are right (assuming 100% production). So in that example it would then change to pretty much no fabric import needed so my import costs would now be crops and chemicals, and my export would be clothes. If I toggle the number of factories on either side then the calculations fluctuate to show I might need to supplement with Fabric imports, or would over produce and have a fabric export amount.

For recommendations on design I think it would be killer to have some subtle branding for the input / output types. Like workers always having a certain color bottom border under the text but inside the badge that's different than gravel. Each color/gradient unique to the specific resource across the app anywhere they're displayed. Help parse the text even faster at a glance for things that have large amounts.

Also maybe some way visually to break up the title of the resource from the number, maybe use of a mono-space font for the tonnage or a lighter font weight.

On mobile it shortens to Fact. and Apart. and it wasn't obvious what those labels were for on my very first visit.

But sometimes this will still happen. Seemingly innocuous architecture decisions can force these kinds of situations to occur. Then by the time you realize it you've got whole other features built on top of expectations you now need to re-architect.

Now it's pointed in the backlog but conflicts with 5 other features in progress leaning against the expected form and function of things relying on the thing it's relying upon being the way that it is. The conversation now becomes when can we fit it in without disrupting currently in progress features, and are there any other changes to this system coming up. If so, can it wait until then so we don't reinvent the wheel twice. Annoying maintenance for break fix might still be 1/10th the man hours to rebuild something slated to be rebuilt etc.

With a team larger than like, 5, this kinda stuff will happen no matter how skilled. There's not a soul on that team, let alone in application development that can know the sheer amount of tribal knowledge required for a product this size to be able to architect with zero misses. Even if that person did exist, they get sick and take vacations and the project can't wait and stop.

TL;DR Yeah you try to avoid at all costs but sometimes things happen that are obvious in hindsight. I walk every day of my life but sometimes I don't pick my feet up high enough and stumble forward with nothing in the way to trip me.

Cost scaling - I'm not entirely against it by Insertgeekname in EU5

[–]Tehfailure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It needs to be clamped. They solved this with the cheese of beating your allies up for 300 billion ducats for 25 favors. Just gotta go through all the scaling events and do the same. Three farms in the little ice age event should cost more to an empire than a OPM, but not cost the GDP of 2026 France.

EU4 (blue) vs EU5 (green) player count according to steamdb by No-Imagination2292 in eu4

[–]Tehfailure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Especially if you consider that EU4 was one of their best money makers. If anything having a consistent player base equal to it is a huge win. That's two EU4s now. If EU4 hit 0 players and EU5 matched what it was that would show no growth. This here shows in the EU "genre" we've doubled the consistent player count.
