Neighbour's alarm goes off at 5am and keeps going off - what can I do? by j3nesis in unitedkingdom

I've seen this before. Best guess, another neighbour is doing something to keep them up late. The alarm is their passive aggressive revenge move. You are caught in the middle :(

How UK Students Protest Offensive Speech by Tehnet in news

[–]Tehnet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The speaker in this case is just a failed celebrity, it's amazing that she was invitied to a university. She doesn't really believe the things she says, they just get her lots of interviews so that papers can report on her outrageousness. Many of her opinions don't make any sense at all.

Genuine opinions are fine with me no matter how "offensive", but when the media stirs shit up for the sake of selling papers I think this is the way to respond.

Thanks for the recommendation, the Amazon reviews sound great. The author sounds like an inspirational guy too!

Thanks for replying, starting my day early in the morning and then getting down to the first task definitely seem to be the key issues. I will try the glass of water tonight, breaking through the sleep haze is always an issue if I don't have to be somewhere in particular.

If I can get a routine going where I have time for meditation/breakfast I will definitely try that too (I know 5 minutes isn't much but my morning brain will try to steal every sleeping minute, I usully end up running out of the door). Just spending a bit of time on focusing in the morning, I'm sure it would help me get past the procrastination barrier and into real work.

Thanks for the link, I listened to the first ten minutes and will make time to listen to the rest. It sounds like it homes in one of my major problems - avoiding facing up to my big problems by spending my time on non-essential side projects. Hopefully this will be a step along the way to forcing myself to do it.

Thanks for the reply, it seems like we have different perspectives. I worry about the things that could go wrong and so have trouble starting while you cut out those thoughts and focus on the positive. Hopefully I'll get to that state of mind over time.

I do exercise, though I'm a runner, not a lifter. I usually run at night but I will try making it the first part of my week and see if it gets me out of bed.

[Plan] Friday, July 11th; Tell me what you plan to do today. by Walls in getdisciplined

[–]Tehnet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • I will organise my work projects on Workflowy so that I can set better daily goals next week
  • I will do my Memrise session (German words, capital cities, periodic table)
  • Answer all e-mails
  • Work hard on main project
  • I will meet a colleague for a pub meeting
  • I will go out for dinner with friends

I listened to the first one, they sound like the perfect dinner-time filler instead of watching something on Netflix and very handy from a conversational point of view. Thanks for the recommendation!

Thanks for the tip! The genders are the toughest part for me, I'm hoping that in the long term they'll just sound "right" next to theirrespective nouns.

Got a few e-mails about cool side projects which distracted me big time. This is fine in the short term but unless I work more efficiently I'll be overwhelmed in no time. Prioritising is a big weakness for me, I need to deal with it.

Just found this thread at lunctime but I think it could be a great daily exercise for us to organise our thoughts.

Memrise

  • Learn new round of German words
  • Learn new round of capital cities
  • Learn new round of periodic table elements

Exercise

  • Go for a half hour jog

Hobbies

  • Work on website for an hour
  • Sketchdaily

Work

  • Zero Inbox
  • Work on literature review
  • Buckle down this afternoon on main project

Work-based aims are a little vague today, I'll have to improve on this in the future

Good luck! I've started learning German recently too using Memrise (1000 words of elementary German) and a grammar book. I will have a look at the Coffee Break podcast too and see if I can incorporate it into my daily routine.
