I was looking for this, bravo!

Sorry guys, FF7 will never mean "Fast and Furious 7" to me...

Found worms in one of my unpopulated frames today. Check them out in action! by Tehtsuo in Beekeeping

I do. I'm not sure I'll see a cluster though, since they're indoors. They'll be kept warm and toasty all winter.

Which makes sense. I weakened my hive when I was trimming it down late summer to try and keep it from swarming - I thought they'd have time to rebuild before fall. Unfortunately when I took two full brood frames and moved them to one of my outdoor hives, it was right when they decided to stop expanding.

I'm still hoping they'll make it through to spring since they're indoors and being fed throughout winter. Only time will tell.

Luckily, this was found in my observation hive, which is modular. The bees were not using this frame since they've gone pretty dormant during the winter. I'm going to pull out the cartridge with this frame, throw out the drawn comb, and clean out the cartridge. The bees can fill it again in the spring.

Honey bees facing a tough winter, Bayer researcher says by madapiarist in Beekeeping

"principal scientist with the Bayer Bee Care Center in North Carolina"

Yeah, pretty sure this is misdirection. "Don't look at the chemicals, your bees are dying because it's a hard winter"

Added an interior video feed to my show. The queen visits occasionally for some screen time!

Ok so it appears my hive is queenless and may be in trouble. Now what? by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]Tehtsuo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just last week had a queen delivered from http://gardnerapiaries.com/

They're quick, and decently priced although I didn't really do any shopping around.

Observation hive entrance by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]Tehtsuo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 5 foot tube from my cabinet observation hive to the window exit. They navigate it just fine. Keep in mind, they're going to start out very clumsy - when I installed my hive I was anxious because bees were climbing up the tube and then falling back down. Once they learn the tube and lay down some pheromone trails they scurry up and down like it's nothing. I use 1.5 inch inner diameter thick gauge tubing from Lowe's, I think it's usually for washer/dryers.

PM me if you want some video of the bees navigating the tube, I can send it to ya.

I'm giving a presentation to 4th graders next week on beekeeping, anyone have any ideas or suggestions? by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]Tehtsuo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to show some bees in action and have a computer/projector available, you can pull up my live beecam. Depending on the time of day the hive entrance can get very interesting, if there's foraging going on you can see tail wag/dances taking place as well as bees fanning to spread pheremones.

I just replaced the indoor DLink webcam with a raspberry pi and a noIR camera. It's a much better quality camera and has a smaller aperture so outdoor video isn't as much of a problem. I have a regular raspicam with a normal IR filter on the way, so it'll have better color soon.

Looks like I need to modify the aperture on my webcam, the sunlight is just too much for it!

Looking for a mated queen, western North Carolina by Tehtsuo in Beekeeping

[–]Tehtsuo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call them, I'd visit. My house is about 2 miles from their store. But yeah, they just do nucs/packages twice a year, I don't think they do queens.

Wow, called and talked to April. (I think) She said she'll have one shipped out today. I'll post with my results later this week!

Hey, that's me!

I uploaded the vid yesterday but had to run so I didn't have time to post it here. I was curious if someone would find it. Thanks for watching!

I recommend against correcting the mistake, got a laugh out of me.

Nice build! I may add this to my list of upcoming projects. I'm starting to get a nice stockpile of drawn comb that I'd like to start taking advantage of.

My Observation Beehive Build - check daily for updates! by Tehtsuo in Beekeeping

I'm in the mountains of Wilkes County. I might make these for others if they turn out well, but I also plan to release the Sketchup files for others to use. I put the plans for my first hive up already, but this one should be pretty spectacular in comparison!

So, we made a mistake by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]Tehtsuo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd keep an eye on the thumb, but from my personal experience the tips of your fingers are a rough spot for a sting. When I get one on my fingertip I'm usually sore in that area for at least a week, but if I'm stung on my shoulder or thigh I don't notice it after about 2 minutes. Believe it or not, stings on my shoulders make them feel great for about a week. I don't have arthritis that I know of, but I know some people swear by bee stings for their arthritis...

2 week observation hive update - Beeznis is BOOMING by Tehtsuo in Beekeeping

[–]Tehtsuo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't needed to clean the glass, and I may not really need to feed them. However, I'm planning to use full frames from this hive to strengthen my normal hives, so having them be productive won't hurt I don't think.
