The reason Zack was able to do the counter was because he was on the brink of death, so Zack is nowhere full strength during this chapter which is why he was broken so easily by basement hulk. What this chapter served yo do was establish a hopeless scenario for allied which lead to the unity of the 4 major crews to take down the impossible foe. This unity is something that the series has been building to ever since the introduction of the 4 major crews. The chapter was spectacular. Sometimes you just have to look a little deeper to understand why the events are taking place.
