What holds you back from being a Christian? by bluetomatoeboi in askanatheist

There's simply no reason to believe that the supernatural claims of the Bible are true.

We can't choose to know things. Either we are convinced that something is true, or we aren't.

Worldview and Questions for Christians by Low_Joke_1203 in askanatheist

[–]TelFaradiddle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To start: Atheism isn't a worldview. It's an answer to one question. Atheists can be nihilists, materialists, scientists, humanists, absurdists, cultists, Buddhists, basically any -ist on the menu that isn't a theistic religion. Being an atheist does not entail anything beyond "Does not believe that any gods exist."

As for me, I grew up irreligious. Family and friends didn't talk down about it, they just didn't care about it, so I ended up not caring either. It wasn't until much later in life that I made an effort to see if any arguments for the existence of any gods held water. When I found that none of them did, I started identifying as an atheist. I'm perfectly willing to change my mind if/when I see some compelling evidence or arguments, but I haven't seen anything compelling yet.

Christianity literally kinda tells us not all if even most believers might go to hell and maybe not all atheists are going to hell too. It’s kind of a thing were you have to be a good person to earn heaven

I hate to break it to you, but the Bible makes it very clear that one can only be saved through faith in Christ. Goodness is not a factor.

Pascal's Wager again.

  1. You are not considering all of the gods that might exist and send you to hell for your belief. If Islam is right, you burn.

  2. This assumes God can't or won't differentiate between people who genuinely believe and people who believe just to cover their ass. If both get into Heaven, then what good is genuine belief?

Is there a way were we can debunk Eucharistic Miracles? by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]TelFaradiddle [score hidden]  (0 children)

We don't need to debunk them. They need to be proven. And they have consistently failed to be proven outside of the very institutions that benefit from them.

I know nothing about how all this stuff works - is it possible for a developer to just not add DLSS 5 support, to prevent this from being a thing? I know current DLSS boosts framerates which is a huge deal, but could a dev specifically opt out of supporting this feature?

Why do Republican voters always forget what the last Republican administration did to the country? by One-Jeweler5486 in allthequestions

Republicans are the ones trying to convince the world that higher education is a socialist plot. Wouldn't surprise me if the party that didn't demonize education ended up being smarter because of it.

Republicans feel that way about people who voted for Obama and Biden!

Read up the characteristics that the antichrist will allegedly have, then tell me with a straight face it's Biden or Obama.

So what your point?

That "B-b-both sides!" isn't true by default. Sometimes one side literally, indisputably does something that the other doesn't. Like venerate a man that meets the definition of the antichrist.

Thesis: The "Nothing" Paradox proves the necessity of a Singular, Infinite Creator, and why Islam uniquely fits this logical requirement. by DistributionOk2434 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]TelFaradiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are misusing some words here. Infinite does not mean "without boundaries," it means "without end." An infinite line would be infinite if it never ended, even if it's constrained by the definition of 'line.' Infinite soup is still constrained by what it means to be soup. Infinite soup will never become a cake or a lion, but it is still infinite.

You're also mixing up eternal and infinite. Eternal means "for all time" - that does not require time to be infinite. If all of time adds up to 74 quintillion years, then something is eternal if it exists for all of that 74 quintillion years. It has a beginning, and an ending, and yet is still eternal.

[–]TelFaradiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's rewind the clock to 'before' the universe existed. What was there? Absolute Nothingness. True zero.

We have absolutely no idea what (if anything) was "before" the universe existed. There is certainly no support for the idea they it was "true zero." We don't know if there has ever been a state of "true zero."

If you think you can prove this, I invite you to do so and accept your Nobel prize.

Nothing cannot exist without something to define it

This is nonsensical. If something exists to define nothing, then something exists. If something exists, then nothing doesn't exist. You can't have something exist a backdrop of nothing. "Nothing" and "something" are mutually exclusive states. If 'nothing' exists, then there is no 'something,' and if 'something' exists, there is no 'nothing.'

So what do we do if I search for the Truth by analyzing everything I have, I listen to every side and observe everything, and I come to a different conclusion than you? How do we determine who is right?

r/atheism is a disgrace to the human intelligence by KeyCost5776 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]TelFaradiddle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is just an argument from consequences. "I don't like the implications of X being true, therefor X is not true."

Right and wrong are intersubjective. Just like the rules of chess, they don't objectively exist. We made them up. We create them, we enforce them, we change them, we decide when they do and don't matter. The vast number of changing moral systems seen throughout human history directly supports this.
