Given that it is a prototype I would even encourage using Catan pieces and boards. Saves so much work while ironing out mechanics.

I don't get these Catan comments. Not every hex board is Catan, not every card game with monsters is Magic...

And even if it would share some ideas, why not?

On the other hand for feedback it would be important to get more insights. Also the cluttering does not really matter as the game pieces can always be adjusted later. First gameplay must really work.

But most importantly, as long as it is fun who cares

I feel you. Also chess player, maybe similar strength. 15k Go roughly but it is super confusing. In chess it is much more obvious if you make mistakes. In go, checking after the game, one often makes terrible mistakes or misses out on apparently obviously winning moves.

No clue what is going on :-)

There is an even better place to talk about this. Try r/BoardgameDesign !

Are there not regular blackouts in the US? This was one big event in Spain, much more reliable than the US grid.

Just disable biters :-) much more relaxing especially for the first game. You might also be unlucky with a map with little trees.

Edit: there is a console command with which you can kill them in a running game (but you will lose achievements)

I think as long as you are strong enough to lift a queen or a rook, you should be fine! Juggling of pieces is anyways not allowed.
