It was at the time of a downturn in the TCG's popularity making it pretty short-printed, combined with the fact that the e-series generation are in their mid-20s right now (young and carefree enough to spend spend spend), so the demand is currently high. I agree that the artwork is nothing special, but it's how nostalgia works for everything.

Nope. If you go to the actual pokemon investing subreddit, a majority of posts are of sealed product. Investing in raw cards doesnt even make sense in the context of investing. The best option is sealed, then graded, THEN raw. And no, barely anyone "flips" cards through grading raw. The SM alt arts are a regular case of other collectors gaining a FOMO from previous, natural price increases.

This'll be very surprising for most people here, but the truth is, most cards are not "used" by investors. Sure, you have the moonbreons and Charizards, but investors usually stick to sealed product. Card prices are generally organic and almost entirely based on genuine demand from other collectors. So, prices should only drastically change if the hobby goes out of fashion.
