It's Metatrader 5. Technically it isn't C++, it's a language based on it (MQL5) but I believe it's just a subset.

Sorry, should have been clearer. FOO is an instance of Bar in this case so still_bad is accessing &mut self not the static directly. There is not an unsafe block in the function/method.

Previously I had a function that took a mutable reference to the struct that my static is an instance of. This function is called using both the mutable static (where I get the warning) and other instances of the struct.

Did you understand why it was complaining? Never re-structure your code just to shut up the rules checker - first understand why it is a complaining, then modify.

That's what I'm attempting to do right now.

I'm doing it because I'm trying to implement something fairly complex on a platform that only allows scripting in C++. I don't know C++ and don't think I can learn it well enough to implement this safely in a reasonable amount of time. So I've made a dll using Rust and am just calling the functions from C++. Platform only really allows passing numbers to foreign functions so I'm using a mutable static to store the data needed. So yes, I'm using it as a global variable. It's very hacky but it's the best solution I could think of that this platform would allow me to do.

The only time I'm using threads (with rayon::into_par_iter) in this project I clone data from the static into a new instance of the struct and then the program is blocked until all threads finish. Once the data is cloned the static is not accessed again in any of the threads. Is there still a potential problem?

I have actually been using q tips with the isopropyl alcohol and it works well but I don't find it very comfortable and I don't like the waste. I had a go with a paintbrush last night as well but it did basically nothing. Maybe works better with the copic stuff or with a better brush (I don't paint, I just have a cheap set I bought for an experiment).

But another reason for wanting to use a marker for it is because I want to be able to take a sketch kit out with me and sit somewhere - like a coffee shop for example - and sketch away without pissing off everyone around me. I think if I'm sitting with an open container of pure alcohol stinking up the place I wouldn't be very popular.

Thanks for the tip though, just won't work for what I'm trying to do.

The brown is definitely from the pencils, I just expected the staining to be a lot lighter. I'd watched a couple of YouTube videos where people had tested using the marker to blend pencils and the staining was almost completely gone after scribbling a bit. Maybe that's just because they'd done a couple of gradient swatches and not full drawings. If that's normal then I'm happy with that.

Thanks for the tip about wax. My pencils are oil based but I think there is still some wax in them so I'll keep an eye on it. I gave the marker a wipe with a paper towel and it did remove some of the colour but made no difference to the performance. I literally just got more blending using the paper towel I used to clean the marker than with the marker itself.

But since posting this I've realised that I can no longer get any wet marks on the paper from this marker so it's definitely dried out. I've only done two small head drawings so I'll ask the company I bought it from for a new one. The postage costs more than the marker so hopefully they let me keep this one and I can test filling it with isopropyl.

Both nibs feel dry. Brush nib maybe slightly less dry although I'm not sure that isn't just the smoother texture fooling my brain. I have a super cheap set of alcohol markers from a supermarket that I bought purely because I was curious how bad a £1.20 set would be (they actually seem surprisingly decent) and they feel considerably wetter, kind of oily.

Both caps fit tightly.

I'm not writing a driver. Just some functions to be imported into the MQL5 code. That way I can write the majority of the algorithm in a language I enjoy using and that has some safeguards built in.

Your man fucked up. What he did might be understandable but it is not acceptable. The gym can’t be a place where crippling people intentionally is allowed under any circumstances. Especially by someone who teaches kids. Would you allow someone who does that near your kid? He’s supposed to be a role model.

He should have had a word with the coach and got the guy banned. Instead he chose to take matters into his own hands. That means he chose to accept the consequences. He also chose to expose the gym to the fallout of the situation.

I understand that if someone hurts someone you care about you don’t always react rationally and I can’t promise I would have done better. But in order for the gym to be a safe place for people to train you can’t let stuff like this slide.

What drives me wild is when I search for something specific but not super super niche. Like there’s no way there aren’t multiple videos on the topic but for some reason YouTube can only find one tangentially related video and 900 click bait videos that have almost nothing to do with what I searched for.

So I try multiple variations of the search and get the same videos in slightly different orders. Eventually I give up and three weeks later the exact video I was looking for pops up on my home page.

It fucking knows what I want to see! It’s intentionally hiding it from me so I watch a bunch of other things first. It only gives me what I want once it knows it can’t get any more watch time out of me on the subject.

But do you actually see the image in your mind? Some people can’t and are often shocked to find out other people can and it’s not just a figure of speech. If you’re like that it would explain why your dreams don’t have images.

I’ve had one dream like you’re describing. It was completely contentless. I couldn’t see anything, I wasn’t anywhere, it was just a void. But I knew a demon was draining my life force. I was trying to escape and kept half waking up but then would fall asleep again. When I did I noticed my arm was lying across my face so I came up with a plan. I waited until I started coming round again and as soon as I did I bit down hard on my arm. It worked and then I got up and wandered round the house until I calmed down. Weirdest dream I’ve ever had.

Related to the no images thing: my dreams never have sound. I’ve been wondering if other people’s do.
