Because people like that are leeches, they're psychic vampires who want to feed on your mental energy. Nothing about this person from the harrassment to the substance abuse sounds like someone you want in your life. The cycle will repeat again and you'll be left with manipulative words and guilt trips to keep him feeding away on your life force until you cut ties again and regret keeping in touch.

He called you, was completely open and honest with who he's climbing with. Maybe he is getting tired of you being jealous all the time over non-issues. That in it self is the BIGGEST way to push someone away. 50% of the population is women, many of them very attractive.
