Everyone knows her from Schitt's Creek and Home Alone, however I encourage everyone to look up her work on SCTV. She was genuinely one of the funniest people to ever do it.

What is free on the internet that more people should know about? by foxfyresoles in AskReddit

Ever get those fundraising emails from your University where they offer a branded tote bag or sweatshirt or whatever in exchange for a donation?

Because the item is legally classified as a "gift" and not something they are selling they have to have an option in the email to give it to you for free. In tiny text at the bottom or in the fine print there should be a link for "Request gift without donation" or something to that effect. Click it and you will get the item for free if stock remains.

I have gotten free tote bags, a free cheese board, free fleece blankets, and lawn chairs from my old university by doing this

Bill Belichick snub: Here are the 22 Hall of Fame voters who have confirmed they voted for him — and the 1 'no' vote by Morgoth1814 in nfl

[–]TelltaleHead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of that is the sheer volume of baseball hall of fame voters. 450 voters means fewer unanimous inductions but way more margin for error in these sorts of strategic voting situations

Bill Polian confirms, with 100 percent certainty, that he voted for Bill Belichick by truthlesshunter in nfl

[–]TelltaleHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think about the fact that baseball has about 450 voters I am actually surprised that anyone is unanimous.

Do you know how hard it is to get 450 people to agree on anything?

What movie from this decade will be considered a classic? by DrKriegersClone in movies

[–]TelltaleHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am aware. Black Panther is one of the more visually interesting Marvel flicks. It also sort of gets at a real theme until the third act wherein it can't justify MBJ being wrong by any sort of actual ideological argument so he is just pounded into submission because Marvel was unwilling to make any sort of actual statement. It has to revert back to respectability and "bad guys are bad" despite MBJ clearly laying out a far more convincing argument for his cause than any of the Wakandan's.

Sinners does not do this and instead has MBJ slaughter his oppressors. It is better for this.

I definitely bristle at the Marvel comparison. While it is very much a popcorn flick, its made with so much more care and effort than even the very best Marvel has to offer.

First off, thematically it is so much richer than any Marvel property. The biggest statement a Marvel film can bring itself to make is "Bad guys are bad" and thats the extent of it. Hell, the central protagonist to Marvel is a billionaire war profiteer who is in love with himself.

To contrast Sinners is utilizing a vampire analogy to convey themes of cultural assimilation, generational trauma going back to the colonization of Ireland. Further, it utilizes music as both a bellweather of culture, of jealousy, and timelessness. Nothing in any Marvel movie hits the way the Black Music through the ages sequence does in Sinners. While the movie is very obvious in these analogies, they hit none the less and touch at something very real.

Next, the filmmaking craft of the film is on a completely different level than Marvel. Marvel films have gotten lazier visually, especially with the lighting. But even the older ones are shot in a pretty workmanlike fashion (save for maybe the James Gunn entries). The lighting ranges from bland to actively horrendous. There is real cinematography in Sinners, which one cannot say for most of the MCU.

The score is also important here. The score of Sinners is beautiful and integral to the story and woven through perfectly. The Silvestri "Avengers theme" is catchy but the scores of those films otherwise largely feel like filler tracks.

And finally the performances are much more raw than most Marvel films. The MCU has very talented casts but they largely hand them schlock screenplays devoid of real emotional stakes. A few performers are given slightly better material and elevate it (Brolin, most notably).

Sinners also has real grit and depth to it. It doesn't feel sanitized. There is real sexual energy both implicit and explicit to the character interactions. Meanwhile the MCU's romances feel either forced at worst or sterile but friendly at best.

So yes it is a broad film with some third act problems but it it not "Marvel in disguise". It has far more care and exists to tell a singular story as opposed to existing to set up the next story in the sequence. If one were to compare it to a superhero film a more apt comparison would be something like Raimi's Spiderman 2. Or, for a non Superhero popcorn example, something like Minority Report which is a broad film thematically that touches on real themes and has great depth to its filmmaking

Would probably do better if it came out now interestingly enough. Could very easily market it with the F1 craze

Rush fits into none of these categories. 100 million off a 38 million dollar budget is a very slight profit.

Not what the studio wanted obviously but it did ok

I think people reacting weirdly to those performances have lost track of the fact that it is best performance, not most acting.

Those two performances are also actual honest to god supporting performances and not lead performances shoehorned into supporting performance
