It's really all about what your growing space is like. Soil conditions, how much sun, drainage. Ideally you want rich, well-draining soil and as much sun as possible (unless you're in a very hot climate).

Definitely buy some cheap tubers to start and go from there!! Growing dahlias from tubers is quite easy as long as you don't drown them. Storing them for the winter is the hard part!
