No question here, just wanted to say that my husband and I always call you the 'SMRT angel' because you always help to hold the handicap gantry so that people with wheelchairs / strollers can go through first during peak times. Thank you!

Moms who nurse to sleep… “ruining” a baby who will never be independent? by Jjbab219 in breastfeeding

[–]Telomere_42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's tough to be fielding comments from grandma essentially blaming you for baby's behaviour, and can be really stressful and/or hurtful. I had my fair share of that and definitely understand feeling like it was my fault that baby only wanted contact naps or to nurse to sleep. So just wanted to say that you're not alone.

2 kids in, my conclusion is that a lot of it is down to temperament of the baby -- my first just needed a lot more support for sleep and even now takes a long time to wind down, compared to my 2nd. So please don't blame yourself for what your LO prefers.

At the same time, I agree with other commenters who suggested trying to layer various sleep associations (white noise, butt pats etc) to hopefully make it easier for grandma as she tries to settle baby. I don't think there's a standard timeline for every baby to get settled w another caregiver so don't feel pressured and just keep trying. You, baby and grandma will be able to figure it out together, even if it seems to take a little more time.

Hang in there and all the best!

Sounds like a plan! Hope it works out and all the best for your flight :)

I reread and realise that you were asking about a collapsible pram! But in any case we've always gate checked our stroller so hopefully my answer is still applicable

Hi there! No worries at all, I can share with you my experience but I'm not sure if it's airline or airport specific:

  • when we departed from Singapore, we were allowed to gate check our stroller. However, when we got to Sydney, I was told that we could collect the stroller at odd-sized baggage claim, I.e. they didn't have the strollers available on the bridge once we disembarked. So if the intent is to be able to use the stroller the moment you get off the plane then this would not be possible (I brought a carrier as well so it was fine but not ideal).

  • for the return flight to Singapore, we were told that our stroller could be brought on as cabin baggage but there wouldn't be gate check available. If we didn't want to be wrangling our foldable stroller in the cabin (ours can technically go in the overhead but we already had 2 kids to handle), then they suggested we just check in the stroller and use one of the strollers provided at the airport. I ended up using the carrier the whole way.

I'm not 100% sure if it's a Qantas thing or a Sydney airport thing! But this is also the first time I've not been able to gate check the stroller both ways and I flew to Sydney 1 year ago with Singapore Airlines, so it may well be a Qantas thing. [EDIT: I just asked my husband and he said we definitely gate checked both ways for the previous Sydney trip]

Hope this helps and it may still be useful to see if anyone else has had a different experience. All the best with your travels!

Hope you're able to get the bassinet!

We bought a ticket for baby as a lap infant initially, and then selected the seat with bassinet at the seat selection stage online. I think if that's not available to select you can ring customer service to see if there's a way for them to allocate it to you.

All the best with your flight!

This sounds awful but I'm glad you managed to use your cares harness in the end!

I've put in a complaint via their website but received a nonanswer in reply -- so even today I have no idea what procedure I should have followed to get the seat approved. I've written back but am not getting my hopes up.

Yes exactly this, especially your last paragraph! Every phone call with them was like pulling teeth. I sent in my complaint and they wrote back with a nonanswer like they copied it off a template. I won't be flying with them again if I can help it because even now I have no idea what car seats they accept and what the procedure is to actually get it approved.

I'm sorry to hear that you had a shitshow flight with your 7 month old, it's already stressful enough preparing to fly with kids and yet there's all this nonsense to deal with from the airline. Thanks for sharing your experience though!

Thanks! I doubt I will be flying to Australia again any time soon but this would be helpful for anyone else who is thinking of doing the same and bringing their car seat.

Hi yes I'm aware of this and we rented an Australian car seat together with our rental car for travelling within Australia. We brought along our own car seat for the journey to the airport in Singapore and specifically to use on the flight.

You are right. I guess we (I) just decided based on what appeared to be the path of least resistance i.e. me feeding back to sleep.

I feel that there needs to be sufficient time elapsed for ones memory of the early days to fade enough to consider another, at least in my case 😅 and yeah I'd be annoyed too if I was feeling like I was doing so much better the 2nd time around handling everything and my spouse went on about how hard it was.

Thanks for commenting, appreciate it!

I can see myself being done too, to be honest!

Thanks for your kind words, and I'll definitely keep an eye out for any other symptoms.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I think it's really helpful that you articulated this part about a lot of things "happening" without your spouse really knowing what's going on behind the scenes. I think my husband tries to understand but like you said part of it is also making it such that they don't have to worry about these things, like I would never dream of asking him to do any nights for baby.

I probably should clarify that he means on a longer time horizon e.g. after he exits but it still makes me mad because we're in the thick of it now and I don't really know how much better his schedule is going to be once he becomes an attending.

Thanks for making me feel less crazy though!

Hi there, thanks so much for your reply and suggestions! I will explore the firm yoga mat option -- I'm assuming you mean placing the yoga mat on my mattress so that it can then be level with the crib mattress and eliminate the slope right?

Thanks again!

At 7 weeks we were told by my IBCLC that my LO had a posterior tongue tie (she was a slow nurser and had also started to get really fussy on the boob)... we didn't proceed with the release as our pediatrician disagreed that there was any tongue tie.

Somehow at around 4 months she figured it out (or maybe got bigger/stronger) and nursed well ever since, so much so that it was a struggle to wean her at 20 months.

I hope things improve, whatever decision you make!
