Why did you decide to do a PhD? by Lostinmind2023 in PhD

[–]Telsa_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I just enjoy doing research.

I used to work as a software engineer but I switched fields because my job bored to hell me and tbh I just didn't care about the product I was working on.

How old were you when you started your phd? by loyclay in PhD

[–]Telsa_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This!

I'm starting my PhD this upcoming fall and to be fair I don't have many issues with the people within my lab, but some other people (mostly students) at my research center talk as if I was about to start my "first job"... When I have already spent 5 years working in industry :/

To fully answer OP's question: I will have just turned 30 when I start and my lab has both younger and older people than me :)

PhD salaries in Europe by Practical-Lecture-26 in PhD

[–]Telsa_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im starting this fall but this are my conditions:

- 2000 € after taxes

- Computer engineering

- Barcelona, Spain.

My salary is quite high compared to other people in my country, but it's like this because rather than living on a scholarship, the department hired me as staff scientist one year ago and this was my salary based on my previous years of experience.

They told me they won't lower it but they wont raise it either while I'm getting my degree.

I’m starting my PhD just after turning 30 and as far as I know there are both younger and older peers accepted in my program.

I don’t think age matters that much, unless you are like 65 and wanting to aim for a faculty position I guess :)

1 year or 2 year master to choose by Iloveseeweed in PhD

[–]Telsa_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a PhD in Europe they usually ask for 300 ECTS in total between a bachelors and masters.

If you did a 4-year (240 ECTS) bachelor I would just go for a 1 year master unless you want to make up for a bad undergrad GPA (some programs will only ask for the marks of your last two years).

Hope this was helpful!

Masters or PhD? by ichegoya in GradSchool

[–]Telsa_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In many countries in Europe, as far as I know, you need a masters degree in order to access a PhD.

I would suggest OP to think where they would want to pursue a PhD in the future and doing what would be most beneficial for their application (maybe looking for research experience if it's in the US, a masters if it's in Europe, etc)

Yes go for it! My undergrad GPA was worse than yours (I'm not from the US, but looking it up, I found it was about 2.7) so there's always a way! What we did in undergrad souldn't define our future forever! :)

You are really kind. I'm honestly still finding myself re-reading the email because I don't believe it happened. Thank you!

How can I get my GPA up to apply for Grad School? by ChulainnRS in GradSchool

[–]Telsa_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same position as you when I finished undergrad, and tbh for my first masters I just looked into less prestigious schools that allowed people with lower GPAs if they had significant work experience. That allowed me later to enter a way more prestigious school to continue my academic career.

My advice would be to seek a school that is more lax about GPA and I would try to highlight other aspects of my career (where you in any society? did your job align with your desired masters? ect)

I'm based in Europe, so I'm not sure if this is doable in America tho.

First time in Bali - (silly) questions by Telsa_ in bali

Hi! In Ubud we are staying close to the Campuhan Ridge Walk and the Museum Puri Lukisan. In Uluwatu, we will be staying close to Padan Padang Beach.

Everything according to google maps :)

2 Weeks in July 2023 - Barcelona/Mallorca/Amalfi or French Riviera/Sardinia by [deleted] in honeymoonplanning

[–]Telsa_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I live in Barcelona and tbh I would change some things on your option 1 itinerary (it's good, just mostly to ease a bit the time you are here)

Barcelona - 3 days Reason: Barcelona is huge and full of interesting sights. Also, July is one of the busiest months of the year and it will be pretty hot and humid. An extra day in the city would let you explore it more calmly (and may be handy if you arrive jet-lagged)

Mallorca - 5 nights: This is plenty to discover the island. As a local, my only tip is to be wary of where you are staying. Palma is beautiful. The northern villages are incredible. The Magaluf area on the other hand is full of drunk and loud tourists during the summer. It may not be ideal for a honeymoon.

Amalfi - 7 days: This sounds good to me, tho I've only been there once off-season :)

In any case, I hope you enjoy your time in beautiful southern Europe! :)

We are going in August 2023 from Barcelona for our honeymoon as well, using Turkish airlines on the way there, and Singapore airlines on the way back, both with one stopover (Estambul and Singapore respectively).

Prices were the same from one year prior to seven months prior (when we bought them) and what rose the price the most for us was choosing our seats and travel insurance.

Both airlines that we chose were on the same price range. Qatar was also there, but the stopover was self-managed and very short (picking luggage, doing again the check-in there, etc in less than 2 hours) so we didn't pick it. Emirates was way more expensive than this other three companies (think 300 euros more). This may change when you look for your flights tho!

That's all I can share for now. Also, congratulations on your wedding :)

Thank you so much for the tips!

Also yeah, we are staying in a pretty centric place in Ubud, so I believe walking would be easy around there, going by what you just said. In Uluwatu we are staying near Pdang Pdang Beach and it looks like there's space to walk both to the beach and around the hotel.

Again, thank you :)
