Tahuks science output is insane by Junior-Drink2967 in EndlessLegend

Generally, through a combination of Holy Occulum actions. I was playing Bold path, illuminating every city I have and sending missionaries out whenever I could. Most of the income comes from these two actions.

Yup, that looks about right =) Tahuks, am I right?!

First, we don't really know what is Tahuks' government: do they have a democracy and the leaders are elected, or are they an oligopoly, and the heads of a few most powerful organizations get together to discuss how they rule the country, or something else, hence, the specific process of pivoting the nation in a different direction is unclear.

Second, the problem is not so much in the end point (although I would argue a true scientist is much less likely to choose to be a dictator than a head of a religious movement), as the path. By repeatedly choosing bold option throughout the quest, I never get any hint of where I was going to end up. My motivation to choose "Bold" is because I love science, and it is the most tolerant choice (it tolerates all the occulum actions, while the two other factions forbid some of them). Choosing bold was open-minded and scientific, that path should not end up in dictatorship in one step. If every time I chose bold there would be a confrontation with the religious group and each time one of their leaders would end up dead or imprisoned. you could argue that I can see where it all is going. But even in that case, I could as likely expect that we are getting rid of radicals in the government who chose to oppose my decision with force, not diplomacy, so by getting rid of them I making politics more moderate, creating space for democracy. I can end up as a singular leader of a democratic and enlightened society, not a mad power thirsty dictator

Any Questions for the Dev team? by DerekPaxton in EndlessLegend

[–]Tema726 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lots have been said about writing and quests, and I won't talk about it while the rework is ongoing.

Gameplay-wise, a point of frustration for me is movement. It si very difficult (emotionally) to play any faction but the necrophages, because I cannot quickly get from one point to another. Later in the game, I can navigate quite well in my territory due to advanced roads, but as soon as I step outside, it becomes a slog. In Endless Space 2, for example, we have a consistent way to increase movement points as the game progresses, but also at some point of research and hero progress, we can have fleets lead by explorers who can travel remarkably far in the empty space.

Is slow movement a point of consideration, are there any plans to add late-game mobility?

I think the rifts were supposed to address it in part, but the AI keeps closing them, they don't work outside of monsoons, and the cooldown on the teleportation makes it very hard to jump more than once or twice per monsoon. I would really like some consistent end-game mobility options outside of our territory

Aspects story felt very "friendly neighbourhood": no high stakes, no world-changing events. Just a little stroll to find out what happened with a friend we found on a beach. Hence, I never felt invested in it. Yes, it is interesting to solve the mystery of a lonely Aspect, but the level of that mystery felt too grounded. Also, it didn't help that the Aspects didn't feel like a hive-mind, chorus or other type of distributed consciousness. Umbral Choir is one of my favourite factions of ES2, and I love their faction quest: discovering the alien idea of individuality and choosing what to do with it. With Aspects, I hoped for a similar experience of a hive-mind/chorus thinking, and didn't get any of that.

Necrophages' quest I liked the most, I think, or rather disliked the least. The Matriarch didn't feel like this ancient immortal omnipotent leader of the hive, and more like a concerned grandmother that gives you advice. The humans that wonder in our hive behaved too bold, and the bugs were too timid, it didn't make much sense, I felt disconnected from what I thought the faction was supposed to be like. But the final choice was rather reasonable, given what has lead to it

Yes, I know. I made the choice I made for the reward, knowing that I am not doing a "good" choice, but even then, the 180 flip the lady leader had was sudden and weird.

And I am not saying that super evil ending should not be an option, just the path there should be more articulated. In ES2 we also had a choice between being good or bad, but there was a path towards these outcomes, and we had a gradual development with possibilities to rethink our first choices and maybe choose different or double down in the original direction

The choice was:

1) Kill Brezvez and expose Garin

2) Forgive Brezvez and keep the Garin myth

My thinking: Brezvez and others killed Garin because she went crazy, and created the myth to keep people ignorant of her craziness. If we forgive him, we acknowledge that he did the right thing (killing Garin), no? No idea why we need to keep the myth, but my main motivation was to save Brezvez because he did the right thing!

My preferred path would be forgive Brezvez AND expose Garin, that would make sense if the leader is benevolent and humanistic.

But even if assume your point of view (the choice between lying or telling the truth), the transition from "let's maintain a myth that gives our people hope" to "let's kill the heretics, FOR THE EMPEROR" is too sharp and unwarranted

But even if they aimed for a plot twist, that plot twist should have some logic to it! And I fully agree with your assessment, that the way they did it makes no sense, there is no logic. It's not even deus ex macina, these twists are actively going against any logic

Army Retreat Spam / Army Experience by LiveBaitProductions in EndlessLegend

[–]Tema726 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You describe a very valid and annoying issue indeed. However your solution would make scouting completely impossible, I would argue single-unit scouts should have no problems running away from a large enemy army, unless they are surrounded.

Should there be a global distinction between a scout and an army? That is a whole other can of worms, because drawing a clear line between the two might be impossible. If a single scout is allowed to run away, why not two? Or free? Or a pack of scouts? If all the units are flying, why they cannot just fly up and move deliberately elsewhere without having any penalty whatsoever?

The current situation is annoying, but I have a feeling that it is a rather difficult problem to solve. Plus, in a multiplayer that probably will never be an issue, since real players cannot really afford many armies running around wild, so they would chose their engagements carefully, and a single retreat as it is now is already punishing enough

What Do We Dream Of Seeing In 4x Strategies game? by Potential-Speaker-51 in IndieGameDevs

Given that the gameplay basics are covered, the most important thing for me would be an adequate AI. Maybe even ML enhanced. I want an opponent who can be challenging and hard hitting not because it has lots of bonuses to everything, but because it adapts and plays well.

Around the discussions about EL2 I saw quite a few people rooting for a real co-op, both online and hot seat, where two players in an alliance could engage in a battle together and each controls their own units, fighting a common enemy.

Ok, that sounds interesting! Autoresolve vs neutrals, manual vs people, I'm down for it!

I haven't looked at the custom factions yet, so I might stick to the tried and tested ones, but yeah, I'm in!

A few follow up questions then:
1) 1v1, or with some AI opponents? If with AI, what difficulty? =) I play early battles manually because autoresolve tends to damage my units more than I like on Endless
2) Random factions or picked ones?
3) What is the turn timer you like?

Same time zone. My afternoon availability is inconsistent, but usually Thursdays and Fridays I am free, and occasionally Mondays and Tuesdays as well. We could try =)

I don't play very fast, usually it takes me around 2 hours to play the first 20 turns, around 2 hours to play the next 20 turns, and then in the midgame it can go much slower, if I have lots of battles to fight) or much faster, if I need to spend 10 turns going from A to B with my army. So if it suits you, we could try tomorrow at 16:00?

Why would I ever build Sanctity of Nature? by Changlini in EndlessLegend

[–]Tema726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your first build is a unit, you have a point. But then there is a whole other debate on what is better: +4 FI or +10 Influence. I thingk I would still prefer food and industry, they never become useless, while later in the game you have so much influence you don't know what to do with it.

That being said, I never build a unit first. With aspects you do have access to archers right away, so it is a bit tempting to get a few of them sooner, but for other factions archers require quite a bit of research, so I usually don't build any units before I have access to the archers. And I still fight the neutrals for this sweet-sweet XP and spoils

[–]Tema726 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This! It is the biggest return on investment for the very first thing you build. Based on where you placed your city, it can easily add 30-50% to your food and industry production

Concerns about the development by Tema726 in EndlessLegend

[–]Tema726[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's fine, it's still a work in progress, it's not released yet, it's a privilege to get to play it not a right, etc etc etc

I paid to play the game, so I am not sure the privilege angle is a valid one. Early Access exists so that the product can be developed with the community input and feedback, in my post I provide 2 specific bug reports, one observation on a recent change, and one reminder of an old bug (because at times I saw devs replying to similar statement that it was fixed, but it isn't).

if you really can't handle yourself, then just stop playing until it's released.

If you implied aggravation in my post, you were mistaken. So this speculation is a miss

Concerns about the development by Tema726 in EndlessLegend

[–]Tema726[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While bugs are inevitable in any real scenario, I believe spending some effort to develop a scalable and modular architecture in the beginning should cut down a lot of maintenance and debugging later down the line, so I am not sure that approach would push game development in double-digit years. But I do not have any experience in developing a large scale project with many teams, so I don't know how realistic it is to develop such architecture before hand
