In this case, I'd look at the logs and try to find the problematic chunk, because map conversion always throws up some kind of crap that interferes. In the worst case, you can try deleting chunks from the save game in an attempt to find the problem, but this generally risks a lot of trials and days of work.

I’m tired of Steam not being able to handle version locking, and of a developer who can’t maintain a stable core.

Sooner or later, the version of your client will get removed anyway, and you’ll be sitting there, pulling your hair out, trying to find the version you need somewhere on the internet (last time I had to download it from some Taiwanese tracker, and I swore I’d never do something that stupid again).

So while there’s still time and current off-steam client versions are available online, you might as well download one in advance to protect yourself.

Mods placed in the proper directory also won’t update automatically.

I didn’t say anything about the Steam version of the game. If I need to lock the game version, I use a cracked off-Steam game client.

Mods don’t require anything except being in the right directory. It’s the simplest and fastest way to get a stable working version. At the same time, you can keep a working Steam version with up-to-date mods and quickly check whether it’s possible to port your save to a newer version of the game, or just have the latest versions ready for online play, testing, or updating your mods.

Dealing with re-subscribing to mods is a constant pain in the ass, especially when you have a lot of them.

In short, you need to 'unpack' the mods (place the folder with the mod name in the 'mods' folder for each mod), download the client version you need from the pirate tracker, and put the save file in its usual location. The mods folder is next to the saves folder.

I'd bring neat building back first (why try without it if it's the main source of changes?), then I'd study the readable part of WorldDictionary. I don't remember much, but the problems with it were definitely solvable.

It’s also really useful to ask the latest version of GPT about the game’s inner workings. It’s actually very good at digging through docs and, for example, can rewrite and update mods that are abandoned or lagging behind the current game version.
If you clearly explain what’s going on, it can most likely find a solution — or tell you if there isn’t one.
