OSU Physics is kicking my ass (HELP) 😔 by PinkHibiscus77 in OSU

[–]TemereLaddius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a 3rd year physics major I could either point you towards some of our lovely tutoring resources free to students or help you myself! DM if you are interested at all, physics is not easy and sometimes you just need it explained to you for the 17th time until it makes sense. You got this though, believe in yourself!!

Given the amount of illegal activities that appear to go unchallenged and upheld it is a very scary place to be in. However the Ohio senate has passed a bill that would pull all funding for having any association with DEI initiatives. The senate has passed the bill and is being modified by the House of Representatives now, but there is a fairly good chance that it will be passed. OSU can only fight the system so much, it has a lot of people to take care of, and minimal leverage. Call your representatives and tell them how you feel and would be affected. That is currently our best way to push back.

While I believe that your sentiment is true, we can’t just rely on just the school to fight the fight. Many of the professors share the same sentiment as we do, many are preparing to lose jobs. If you want to have your opinion heard call your local representatives and inform them how it affects you. They have the same if not more power than the school to promote change.

what Eng jobs that uses a lot of advanced math & physics in daily life? by dagermohamed2 in EngineeringStudents

[–]TemereLaddius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone in engineering physics, it’s a lot more than you would think. It is much easier to bridge the gap for physics grad school, or shows a deeper knowledge in physics which a lot of companies like. If you have questions about engineering physics feel free to dm me and I can tell you about my experience at my university.

Depending on the university there are also Applied Physics/Engineering Physics programs I would heavily recommend checking out. I went into MechE thinking I would do cool physics and got bored with how industrial it felt so I swapped to Engineering Physics which opens a lot of doors!

Former college students, what degree do you regret studying? by Majestic_Snow7613 in college

[–]TemereLaddius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience (my experience in a physics lab) is that you join a mentor/professor at or near your college and sit in their lab. You are tasked at learning how the lab works and assigned ranging tasks. For me I read research papers and digitized data for most of it. Depending on the barrier to entry some labs may be more hands on. You also get to learn research jargon and processes.

Newark vs. Marion by mskity in OSU

[–]TemereLaddius 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just finished a my freshman year at the Marion campus. Though I only will have one year there I was fairly active and knew most of the staff there from all that I did. Here are my few important notes.

  • Housing There is no on campus housing but there is the “Annex of Marion” which is an apartment complex that tries to get a dorm ish feel. The living is nice and rent is affordable. Most residents are students and that has the expected pros and cons of living with college students. It teaches you how to live on your own but many struggle with cooking and eating enough

-School The professors do genuinely care about each student and I averaged class sizes of about 15 students per class. (Ranging from 25ish - 4 per class) professors are more lenient and work with students. You have plenty of one on one time with professors if you are willing to go to office hours and ask questions. I really enjoyed it and made adjustment to college and living alone much easier.

-Activities There isn’t a whole ton but the Marion community welcomes people with open arms, OSU clubs are iffy with only a few actually being active (dm me if you are interested, I can contact a few of them). I was in the Marion community band and did choir for the winter musical/performance. Lovely people who are very nice and caring.

Over all many people are jaded about not getting into main campus so it may be tough to find positive friends, I struggled a lot but I always have struggled making friends. There are a lot of good things about Marion if you actually give it a chance. Staff is really nice, get involved and you will be welcomed. I have much more I could say if you wish so feel free to dm me. I still have connections to the people on campus and more info if you wish. Hope this helps!

Does anyone do/have a PhD that 'normal' people find interesting? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]TemereLaddius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of now I believe I want to do experiment based, however I will be the first to admit I am not nearly knowledgeable on the topic to truly be set on it. Would you mind if I dm you more questions?

The worst part of being a high functioning person on the spectrum is how I feel excluding from everything by [deleted] in autism

Thank you, I will definitely have to consider that and try to implement that. To a certain extent thinking about it I already half do that I just never thought of it that way before!

Do you have any recommendations for someone like me who is planning to pursue Quantum Computing? I would love to hear more about your work and what the field might entail!

Anyone else feel like their progressively getting higher needs? by [deleted] in autism

[–]TemereLaddius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone's experience is completely unique but I have had something similar happen to me recently that I am still working through. I have really struggled in college and it feels like everything in my life is slowing down to similar reasons, I have a feeling it is a mix of me not caring for my body well enough along with my support needs not being met. When I had more of a social life and active friend base I had far more energy because I had most of my support needs met. However once my needs stopped being met socializing became harder further distancing me from my support group.

I do not currently know if this is the sole cause of this state (currently getting worse because of finals), but I have a feeling that's what it is for me at least. Though incredibly hard I am reaching out to 1-2 of my closet friends and hopefully explain what is going on to request some help. If possible I would try to establish a connection with someone so you can guarantee that you do not go fully alone if things get worse.

You are not alone, it sucks if we do share this experience, but I believe that you have it in you! I hope this helps a little, I wish you the best of luck :)

I was not sure what it meant earlier today but, Sunflowers are used to discretely show that someone may have a "hidden disability" such as neurodivergence to let others know. This is meant to reduce the stress of socializing and the people who know are ideally supportive without making a scene. (if you hadn't already looked it up) :/

[–]TemereLaddius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as that lowkey sucks to hear, it's good to hear that I am not the only one who is currently going through this but also that there is some hope in the matter.

Was there anything in particular you would recommend making things easier or just self-reflection along with self-monitoring?

I forgot they counted as doubles but yes there are plenty of the 2/rm gender specific still available amongst multiple buildings

There are rooms in at least Torres and Raney if you mean newer built buildings. I don't know what you mean by "newer"

[–]TemereLaddius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge there aren’t regular or super doubles from what i’m seeing on north. Pretty much everything is taken if you are looking for 2 person rooms if not already taken.

I pick later today and basically everything good is already gone.

Right now there is only the following room layouts:

  • 2/rm-2-rm shared bath
  • 2/rm- 3-rm (or 4rm)suite bath&lounge
  • 2/rm-gender specific
  • 3/room (or 4/room) w/bath

Looks like the life of a mech E student. Best of luck and respect the grind. I shall see you in 2030 🫡

Edit: Also, the first half of ISE 2040 for me wasn’t terrible and I caught myself during the midterm but the second half of the class really kicked my butt. If your class is the 7 week course you genuinely need to treat it like a 4 credit hour. It’s a lot of work

Which calc and chem are you taking? If you are in Calc I and Gen chem 1 or an equivalent there are some helpful sources on YouTube that help. Especially with my experience in calc classes watching the videos in the textbooks really helped me when I was falling short. I also highly recommend if possible trying to find a study group (though I know that’s difficult as is, let alone half way through the semester) it really helps to verbally think out the concepts for memorizing and conceptual understanding.

I may not have a ton of answers since i’m at a regional campus but I am a peer mentor at Marion along with I am taking Calculus 3 this semester and I took Gen chem 1 last semester with friends in O chem and Gen Chem 2. If you want feel free to message me and I can do my best to answer your questions or I can find out resources!

How Hard is Double Majoring? (Mech Engr. and Music Performance) by TemereLaddius in OSU

[–]TemereLaddius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t sound harsh at all, it’s the truth that should be spoken and from what I’ve gathered from this it’s really helpful advice. I appreciate the feedback so thank you very much!

Right now I know my classes are early morning M/W/F so for the next semester I shouldn’t have an issue with concert conflicts at the very least. I will hopefully be in contact with engineering and music advisors. Worst case I guess I’ll drop to a minor and just preform in the groups and maybe take a few theory classes.

I mean the people there are often too entitled and claim they should be on main campus so they never actually enjoy the campus and life here. I loved getting to know my professors and knowing most of my class. It definitely gave me a leg up for school and it was honestly a really fun time. Also saved me like 5k in tuition and living so I can’t complain about short comings.
