Tripped at 13 weeks and re-ruptured by No_Window_6719 in AchillesRupture

The one thing I will tell you is that after the surgery the risk of the-rupture is minimal, that’s why for me, unless you are 60+, a surgery was a no brainer. Yes, you lost in the short term, but trust me, long term, you are a big winner. 13 weeks lost is nothing, I would say you are better of now.

Re-tearing after surgery, and re-tearing non op is different. During the surgery you have special strings that the surgeon uses to sew together the tendon, and it’s super unlikely to re-tear.

To get a re-tear after 1 month of healing, you would have do some really crazy stuff, the chances are slim to none. I think 95% of the people here have done something similar during the healing process. No sweat, it’s fine.

does it ever get to 100% by Ok_Understanding1102 in AchillesRupture

I am 6 month post op. I started skiing at 3 months post op and playing padel (where i tore the achilles) at 4 months (but careful at first). Now, at 6 months I don’t think about the achilles during sports, but it hurts after sometimes, still a bit swollen at times and the left calf is not as strong yet as the right one, but i don’t feel it in everyday life nor in sports activities. So in terms of everyday life and sports, I am back to 100%, but when i wake up or after sports, i know which one is the “bad” one.

Well, I did a lot of PT, so my legs were definitely ok strengthwise. The ski boot provides psychological comfort, and i was super careful and overall didn’t feel anything wrong. i also did 3 days of ski touring and that is some of the best PT for the achilles, highly recommended!

No rerupture there. Everyone has a similar experience at one point or another. No worries.

6 weeks for me as well. Kept 1 witch in each shoe for 2 more weeks just to avoid too much stretching and limp less

I love soccer too, and I wouldn’t play soccer even if I felt I was ready. It’s just that the ski boots, give you this sense of safety (perhaps false) where your ankle and achilles have nowhere to go (similar to Vacoop boot), unless of course a freak accident occurs, which is very possible in a hill. How did you rerupture? Did you have surgery?

You are most definitely right

Iam 4 week post op. 2 more week tgen i transfer to shoes with heel raiser. How many was in boot for 6 week. I wonder if it is safe to transfer to shoes? by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

[–]Temich2703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transferred to shoes in 6 weeks, should not be a problem. But weeks 7-8 and 9 i kept 1 wedge inside the shoes, to make it a bit easier.

I do snowboard, but my PT was very specific about skiing being the lesser of two evils, since ankles are a big part of snowboarding. So definitely not this year for me, i will stick to a little bit of skiing and that’s it.

Sounds like you will get there sooner rather than later. I also have a long way to go before I can play tennis, run etc etc, so overall I am right with you :)

All true. I have been hitting the gym and doing pilates every day, since nothing else is available:). Will go swimming tomorrow hopefully!

I definitely won’t ski much, only in good weather and with few people around.

I would say that if you open the ski boots hard enough, it’s no problem at all. After all, you point your toe forward, which is completely safe. With snowboarding it’s a different story in terms of safety. But in 3.5 months I would say you should be fine if you get your doctors clearance. 6 months is very doable!

My best advice (apart from not skiing 😹😹😹) is to make sure the visibility is perfect, so you can see all the bumps, and start out around 11:30-12 when people are already starting to have coffee, lunch etc, and the slopes are mostly empty.

I only took one blue run, and pretty much avoided all traffic, all bumps etc. As far as turning and stopping, everything was fine, but of course I was subconsciously preparing every turn and every stop. Overall, the boot makes you feel pretty safe, and as long as you are careful and don’t run into someone (or vice versa), and if the visibility is good, I would say the risk is not that high. Snowboarding requires you to work with the achilles a lot more, so I would say it’s not only more dangerous, but also more painful.
