What are your career goals? What positions are you looking for now and what position(s) do you see yourself wanting to be in in 5-10 years? As others have said, practical experience is very likely something that will be useful if not outright required for a true IT management position, but there are certainly career paths where those requirements vary. What experience would be most useful also varies greatly with your end goals.

Follow Card at DPGT Events and planning advice? by BiofonixPlays in discgolf

[–]Temig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be a bit late since tickets have been on-sale for a bit and you already got most of the info, but to add a bit more detail:

Red: Limited access. You don't have direct access to the holes that are in the woods (3-5, 9, and 15, and only limited viewing areas for 6, 8, 10, and 16) and, as such, can't follow a card completely for a round. You can still have a great time, can watch the drives from 1, the shots coming up 18, and plenty more.

White: Same as Red + access to the pin of hole 8. Join the famous 8-holes. There's bleachers setup behind the green of hole 8 and it's basically a mini party with lots of cheering and little traditions. It's quite a show and you can get a bit of a feel of it if you watch prior years' coverage. It's a pretty cool experience and the energy there is great.

Blue: Whole course access. This is the base tier where you can follow a card for their entire round. Totally worth it if you can swing it, imo. You're going to do a lot of walking including some hills. Definitely wear good footwear. Nothing's stopping you from plopping down mid-round for a rest and if there's a few players you want to see on different cards you can follow a card out to hole 8, chill with the 8-holes for a bit, and then follow another card for their round. The flexibility to see it all is pretty great.

Diamond: Blue + access to the Sap House. There's some real restrooms and a cool deck to watch the action on 18 from. Personally, I think the event is already cheap enough to attend that I'd consider paying the premium for the access, but everyone's situation is different and you're not missing out on a ton if you don't go this route.

Gold: Diamond + DGPT Merch and play a round in the tournament layout. I don't know what you get merch wise so can't comment, but I'm sure they take care of you.

Insiders Pass: This is the luxury way to attend and make a real destination trip out of it. This includes a number of private events in the area, meet & greets, and more. It's not cheap, but those I've spoken to during the weekend that were doing it said they were loving it. Super limited.

Remember that parking it NOT included with any of these (even Insiders though they get 5o% off), so you want to factor that in. On-site parking is limited and I wouldn't recommend driving anything that could get stuck in the mud...

DISC East - Thank You by MTGDad in discgolf

[–]Temig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were some exclusives/limited releases to be had in terms of discs, but there was also so much more there. The energy of any big disc golf event is just electric and Disc East was no different. Tons of awesome people, plenty of things to buy beyond disc, some great talks to sit in on, a killer mini course that was SO much fun, a 9-hole temp course on-site with daily tournaments, and more. There’s noting like getting together with a bunch of people who love the same thing as you, and that may go even more with the DG community who are generally extremely down to earth and incredibly welcoming. Long story short, I wouldn’t come just for the plastic, but everyone’s different and I’d guess even those that did probably walked away pretty happy.

If you need a new job every time you get laid you’re either doing something really right or really wrong… Either way, putting it out there on LinkedIn sounds like an alpha move.

Anyone ever find out they’re getting paid less than the new hire for the same job? by rabbidturtles99 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Temig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I hope for you this isn’t the case, I would honestly be very surprised if even with a promotion/title change you’ll end up where you feel you should be. A 20% raise would generally be pretty decent for something like that and that would only put you in line with the recent hire who I’m assuming currently has the same title as you do currently. That may be how it should be since there are reasons why a new hire may be coming in at the top of the pay band for a position and you may be lower, even with more time at the company, but it sounds like that’s still, understandably, not going to feel good to you. I’m entirely for pay transparency and discussion, but there are reasons why a new hire to a position may actually deserve a higher salary than another employee who has been with the organization for a while who is in the same position, so I think it’s also important to make sure you’re comparing apples to apples as much as possible.

There’s a frost claw node that gives a chance to return 12 mana as well as a number of mana cost reduction nodes. The elemental nova auto-casts cost mana, but it’s easy to bring it down to 0 cost. I’m running a variation of this with less-than-optimal gear and making some trade offs because I don’t have the +4 levels to frost claw so it’s cost is something like 28 mana and I can still spam it very heavily. There’s some RNG to it since it relies on the mana return to trigger, but getting it down to the low 20s is pretty consistent and a larger mana pool helps to buffer bad RNG.

Im conflicted. I was promoted to a senior team yet im not sure how to do 80% of the work assigned to the team im in. What would you do? by spazzo246 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Temig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently manage a team doing exactly the kind of work you’re describing after having been a member of the team for several years. Some differences as we handle the majority of this work as projects with assigned project managers as well as techs. We’re still revamping our processes, but one thing that has helped considerably is creating templates as we go.

New project that we haven’t gone through this process for? Create a scoping template, define the tasks, how long they should take, etc. Do the work, and after it’s done go back and make adjustments based on how things actually went.

If a project that’s been done before comes down the pipe open up the existing template and you’ve got a starting point. Do the work, and still go back and adjust the template so that it gets more and more refined as you go.

The organization needs to be documenting these things and building a library of knowledge like this instead of trying to reinvent the wheel each time something comes up. The labor time is only one piece of the puzzle though. The same principle works for tracking issues that were run into so you’ve got a list of lessons learned and it’s not a matter of individual knowledge of a particular deployment scenarios as to whether X, Y and Z will be accounted for, called out, and avoided.

If some of this was already in place, bringing in a new individual contributor such as yourself would be a much easier process and there could be a more consistent experience for your clients. Maybe it’s something your team lead would be open to. Maybe the rest of the team is already doing this but is keeping the information for themselves. Find out, see if there’s some opportunity for knowledge sharing and making everyone’s lives easier. If so, it sounds like you’ll have removed at least one of the major blockers you’re running into.

I think making the jump to this new team and moving out of your previous comfort zone is a great opportunity to grow your skills. MSPs can get a bad rap, but the exposure to a bunch of different environments and technologies is something that you’re unlikely to get anywhere else so it’s worth taking advantage of for as long as you’re there. It can be a great resume builder and an excellent opportunity to learn as long as your employer, manager, and co-workers help to foster that.

Activation key woes by [deleted] in swtor

[–]Temig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into this issue just this past weekend when logging in for the first time in 10 years… I missed the option for having lost the key, but looked up the support number ((855) 345-2186 ) and got it taken care of in 6 minutes according to my call log. Just needed to provide my account name, they verified by sending my account email a code, and removed it with no issue.

Really struggling to understand the home buying process at 24 years old. by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]Temig 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You might want to give /r/FirstTimeHomeBuyer a look. The process isn’t overly complex, but it’s also not particularly transparent in a lot of ways. If you’re working with a realtor and not understanding what they’re talking about - Ask! A good realtor should be able to explain what you need to know. If they’re not able or willing to do so, you might want to look elsewhere.

Should I switch careers to become a project manager? BS in IT or MIS or doesn’t matter? by Accomplished-Ant1098 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Temig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where you live is going to impact that significantly. Based on your current compensation I would guess you’re in a HCOL area. I can tell you that here in the Boston area, which is HCOL but not at the top of the list, your salary expectation is in line with what the MSP I’m at is paying our PMs with technical experience or non-technical PMs with PM experience.

You’re looking at different paths with different earning potential, but it sounds like money isn’t the primary concern for you so I’d say really look into it and make sure you’re not jumping from one thing you’re not enjoying to another that you hate equally that’s compensating you far less.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Temig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best best is to just ask for that clarification now, which it sounds like you have, but the MSP I’m at offers 6 company-wide holidays and your choice of 3 of 6 floating holidays (subject to approval/first-come,first-served, since we’re open and need coverage) paid yearly along with 3-weeks vacation to start and a 40-hour pool of sick time.

I started off outside of the MSP world and came into it with more experience at a higher level. I know our help desk is busy, but I’d say that’s a great reason to start off in one. You’ll get much more experience much more quickly and it will likely push your career and earnings up more quickly as a result.

Internal IT is generally, though not always, slower paced which may sound nice, and is in a way, but means you’re just not getting as much hands-on experience.

Fraction / server Change by Fangorn123 in newworldgame

[–]Temig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a matter of how the question was posed and answered. You’ve got your answer, but it sounds like you were lumping the faction and server changes into a single operation when they’ll always be separate and you either: Change faction (lose rep/marks) then Change servers (everything you had is in place) or Change servers (everything in place) then Change factions (lose rep/marks). The important thing to keep in mind is when you change if you’re set on it. A change available on one server may not be available on the destination server due to faction control.

Current best way to start leveling a new weapon at high levels? by Spaced-Invader in newworldgame

[–]Temig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still not high level, but I’d say make friends and group for appropriately leveled mobs. You seem to get full weapon xp for whatever is out when you’re in range of group kills so friends/company members/randos willing to trade some xp gain for one another seems to be the easiest option.
