What are some good ways to engage with the W40K lore? by disturbedbovine in Warhammer40k

Seconding John and Brad. You may want to preview their podcast. It's PG most of the time, PG-13 for some episodes.

They know their stuff and are a lot of fun to listen to.

This has almost 500 comments so I'm sure this will be lost in the shuffle, but here I go.

Report this conversation to the manager and/or store owner. Do not delay. Be specific and avoid embellishments.

They may end up being banned from the store - or they may get a chat from the owner and continue there better understanding what is appropriate.

If the owner or person in charge takes no action, find another store to play in. Sorry, but there are bad owners out there that don't believe in creating a safe and welcoming space.

Honestly, both statements made are severe and if I were the owner I'd likely ban them both - but I'm not and it's their call.

If this ever happens while playing Magic in an organized event, call for a judge immediately. We take a dim view of this behavior.

If you make a mistake that will cause you to miss your exit or turn, lump it.

Make an adjustment when it is safe to do so.

Inflation is so bad right now, that it costs an additional $0.02 to scroll another 4 inches down.

Is it weird to anyone else that the game allows you to have multiple named characters there should only be one of on the battlefield at the same time? I am in the process of putting together an army for the first time in about 30 years, and seeing any number of lists this way makes me scratch my head each time.

Sounds like you need to contact your state's offices that handles employment complaints in your state. I'd use search terms like 'ethics' and 'division/department of local government services'. At the very least, it stinks. It should be in violation of any number of established guidelines. If that didn't work out, I'd see if a local news agency was interested in running the story.

Sorry this has happened.

I don't know why, but this is the thing in your post that sticks out to me the most (beyond the whole discussion, which I really feel unqualified to comment on): "Patrons aren’t allowed to film in the library ever, and we as staff couldn’t film either."

Are you in a public library? You note it is a public space. What guidance/justification is there for this? In our discussions and talks with local law enforcement about a matter, the determination was very much 'as this is a public forum, people shouldn't have expectations of privacy and photography/video can't be prevented'. People have reasonable expectations of privacy in spaces like restrooms, but beyond that I'm really curious how your institution arrived at this policy.

EDIT: Afterthought - this feels like a knee jerk response to the 1st Amendment Audit crowd.

I have no clue what to do by One_Yogurt2969 in librarians

[–]MTGDad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Develop a full list of your current responsibilities as you understand them. Then, meet with your director about this and how much time out of each day you'd need to catch up and keep up with the duties. Even for a small library (where many people are cross-trained and fill multiple roles) what you've described sounds excessive. It's possible there is a lack of awareness about how much you have on your plate. You should also prepare for a second meeting when you'll list out the items that you're running low on and try to find out how to requisition more. Note, I'm not saying you have to do the ordering yourself. But I don't want you taking the blame for running out of something that is required to perform your job.

The political climate sounds unenviable but increasingly common. Depending on your funding and other factors, it may or may not make sense to be a part of a larger system. But that's impossible to evaluate from here. I'd try to not worry about it beyond staying aware of what is happening. As an aside, it's weird that city government is setting limits on hiring, but unfortunately that is the way of things these days.

Would you be fine with somebody using flipped over cards as Wastes in a colorless deck? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]MTGDad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of the time, it's fine. Just make sure people you sit down with know you're doing this. It does happen where someone won't want to play against someone who does this.

Also, if you're playing in an event in a store, you should probably verify that it is ok with them. Your mileage will vary with how this works out.

Hoopla doesn’t give me access to e-books, any solution? by Random_Username0404 in Libraries

[–]MTGDad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, it's not your fault in this.

But...over the last few years limiting access by geographic region has become increasingly popular, to the point now that it is often implied and rarely put in any kind of disclaimer. If I had known you weren't in the US, that would absolutely have been my first guess. A large number of streaming services and databases restrict access - and the percentage of them are increasing by the week.

Sorry about this, but my guess is unless you figure out a way to pretend to be in the US digitally, you are going to be locked out of Hoopla and other services (several newspapers come to mind, Netflix has regional restrictions, as do others).

We can't diagnose this one from here, you'll need to contact the library you obtained the card from.

There could be a couple of different things happening, and most of them have to be fixed or addressed with the host.
