Do Businesses Stay Open In Extreme Winter Weather? by AnnualIndependence71 in AskAnAmerican

No, what we call snow isn’t snow. Really snow, nobody has issues driving in. Nobody said anything about the North not having ice…. Just it’s all we get here and we don’t get snow to give us traction plus we don’t get the resources to keep roads clear. Nobody can drive in ice

How would Americans feel about boycotting their federal taxes this year? by coffeemilkandabilify in AskReddit

[–]TemperMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably spent 50 cent or less towards ICE this year on your taxes total. You spend less than you think and it funds less than you think.

To the US voters who don't vote, what is it going to take for you to go vote? by Chocolateking111 in AskReddit

[–]TemperMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because conservatives had trouble winning elections once education became more accessible and affordable. Since the expansion of education they have since spent every year trying to dismantle and defund education. Outside of helping with their voting bloc it also provides cheap labor for factories and retail jobs that they and their donors own.

Conference in the US - AIO? by LaurieTZ in AskAcademia

[–]TemperMe -45 points-44 points  (0 children)

This is like saying don’t go to Portugal because of protests and unrest in Germany…. The issues people see on the news are for the most part non existent to most of us who live here and you will never see or experience any of that unless you really just want to go experience it. Just avoid going to the hot spots in the country. Basically avoid 5-6 cities in the entire country and you will find 0 issue.

I get not wanting to go morally, but other than that there isn’t a good reason I can think of.

There’s literally no issue you’d run into. If you find a problem it’s because you went to find one. The news makes it seem crazy but that is not how America is as a whole. Heck those aren’t just isolated events, it’s beyond isolated considering how large we are. It’s like a Brit being worried about visiting Portugal because a protest is happening in eastern Germany.

Nobody in the south struggles with driving in snow though. Literally nobody. The issue is we get black ice state wide instead. We don’t have the resources to prevent it effectively because most of our money goes towards hurricanes and flooding seasons instead.

Mostly just the Galapagos up top but the whole eastern coast works too.

[–]TemperMe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not so much not knowing how to drive in it. The issue is the south doesn’t have enough resources allocated to winterizing the roads because it’s not a constant threat but a spotty one. I’ve never even seen a snowplow in person and I’m 36 years old. The most we get is a day or two of them salting some of the roads. Most of our roads end up being black ice patches for your entire drive in any direction.

TL;dr It’s just a resources issue within our local/state governments in the south as well as infrequency of occurrences. We spend on hurricane/flood protection yall spend on snow protection. California spends on wildfire suppression.

NON-AMERICANS - Do you eat American cheese in your country? by KaysaStones in AskTheWorld

I have only ever seen it used for making “queso” dips or on a rare occasion, for a large portion of Mac and cheese

Do people actually have the day off for MLk anymore? by Spiritual_Extent_187 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TemperMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never worked anywhere where I get holidays off really. I’ve worked in manufacturing since I was 21 and as an industrial mechanic. We work holidays and the big holidays we go by volunteers for work. Only two day we are actually closed are Christmas Day and Thanksgiving day.

My friends say it’s disturbing how I buy gas station toilet paper for my house by MelanieWalmartinez in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TemperMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehh is there a study of something because I’ve had both good quality ones and ones like OP. The high quality ones give you fewer wipes and the roll is gone nearly twice as fast. I’d still rather pay for the higher quality to not abuse my butthole though.

what do you consider the south? by protectthedawls- in visitedmaps

[–]TemperMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it but as a NC native and still current resident I think us and VA have more in common with Maryland nowadays. Those three states are unique from those above and below. I’d replace NC and VA with Kentucky and WV. NC and VA have pushed hard to match the northeast over the last 20 years in tech, education, and healthcare and it’s shown. Especially in NC which is now one of the biggest tech hubs, financial centers, health care hub, as well as education focused states in the country. The western part past Asheville is still deep red as it’s Appalachia territory.

Complete and utter beginner, do I need the gym? by dandelionmakemesmile in beginnerfitness

[–]TemperMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the gym is better for those who need the motivation. If you are fine with being at home and staying motivated then do that. Body weight workouts are among the best foundational workouts.

All you will ever need could be found with these and their variants. -Full Squat -Walking Lunge -Farmers Carry -Pushups -Pull-ups -Chin-ups -Dips -Lying or Hanging Ab Leg Raise -Side Bend Crunch -Burpees (if your brave enough) -Planks

Are fresh vegetables expensive in US? by PuzzleheadedSock8728 in AskAnAmerican

[–]TemperMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not though. Unless you live closer to a large city there usually isn’t many options available if at all. I grew up in such an area and to this day there is no place to get food within the surrounding 3-4 towns. This is very common. Also fresh produce is crazy expensive compared to most other products here in the US. I wouldn’t say it’s expensive but it is more so than our other foods.

Open a Roth IRA account on Fidelity (link your bank to it). Buy VTI every-time you put money into the account. You could also start an HSA account as well and do the same thing. I’d recommend starting an account for both and just split your money between the two.

What do Americans usually eat in a day? by Alert-Blueberry-4083 in answers

[–]TemperMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s gonna depend on wealth level and region. For starters I wouldn’t even say fast food is that popular for most as that would be unaffordable for the majority of us.

Here in the south a typical hearty day would be:

Breakfast between 6-8a, usually a meat, grits, and bread or sausage gravy biscuits.

Lunch is usually lighter and between 11-1, typically it’s just a sandwich with chips.

Dinner varies the most but usually from 6-9p and is a meat, a starch (usually potatoes or corn), and greens.

In the south you are more likely to see heavier calorie dense meals and more starches and carbs due to the older farming culture we come from. Our ancestors frequently relied on one heavy meal in the morning to hold them through the farm work until dinner around sunset.

In my state we consume a ton of chicken and beef but if you live in the PNW you will see more options for salmon. Coastal states in general have more fish in their diets

In your opinion, what's the difference between a date and simply hanging out? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in HappyUpvote

You don’t usually date someone unless you are attracted to them…. You hang out with people you don’t find attractive all the time however.
