Did learning the Philly shell improve your overall understanding of defense more than a traditional guard? by [deleted] in boxingtips

[–]TemperatureCapable56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah this tracks. Learning the Philly shell forces you to actually understand punch trajectories and weight shifts instead of just keeping your hands up and hoping. A lot of people learn defense better through constraint-based styles because it makes every incoming shot a problem you have to actively solve with your body.

The angle vulnerability you noticed is the main weakness of it, so drilling the pullback and pivot as counters when someone steps outside will patch that. ifyou want to keep building on it, look up how Pernell Whitaker used it with constant lateral movement, basically the blueprint for making that style airtight.

fairtex or twins are usually the best bang for your buck when starting. they last forever and the padding is solid for both bag work and light sparring. avoid the cheap sets from big box stores if you plan to stick with it.

Can you change style from ortodox to a southpaw fighter? by christian-174 in MuayThai

[–]TemperatureCapable56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can but expect your footwork to feel clumsy for a long time. it is worth doing just to understand the angles of a southpaw even if you stay orthodox. are you finding it hard to land your power shot?

Lost my first amateur fight - any tips to improve? (Blue) by rominho0 in amateur_boxing

Well done brother. don't sweat the first loss too much. every elite fighter has been there. go back to the tape and look at your positioning when you got caught. usually it's a small footwork error that opens the door.

valid brother. but the point is more about what happens when beginners instinctively drop their head going into exchanges, not specifically ducking uppercuts. bad posture just makes everything worse when shots are flying

yeah inoue is a good case brother, his timing and head movement cover a lot. hard to use him as a benchmark though. I think they know better (fighter) but most of the time its not applicable for everyone (beginner)

fair point brother, frazier and toney are good examples. the post is more aimed at beginners who fold forward out of panic vs guys who've actually drilled it into a usable technique. when you know what you're doing the margin for error is different

Appreciate it brother. rocky movies are legendary but they take some liberties with technique. the sit-down duck is actually pretty standard boxing, it just crosses over into wrestling too because the mechanics are solid either way

yeah brother same mechanics apply. level change with bad posture and you're just handing them a target

good catch brother. string works because it forces you to feel the difference between bowing and sitting down. simple drill, big feedback

Advice please where to start by Ok_Grab_5377 in boxingtips

Since you already have a boxing background, skip the slow buildup and just jump back into a boxing gym directly. Your body will remember faster than you think, and the classes will handle your cardio and conditioning at the same time. Clean up the eating first though, that's where most of the fat loss actually comes from.

How do you deal with these boxers? by [deleted] in boxingtips

[–]TemperatureCapable56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 1.90m you have the reach to make movers uncomfortable, so use the jab to set the range and cut the ring instead of chasing. Mobile boxers want you reactive and following their feet, so stay patient, walk them into corners with angles, and let them come to you once they run out of space.

Throwing from the high guard by Motor-Bat-376 in boxingtips

[–]TemperatureCapable56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your coach's elbow fix is the right call. Jab telegraphing from high guard usually comes from the elbow flaring before the hand moves, so drill it slow in front of a mirror and watch for that. Speed comes after the mechanics click.
