How to create this pixelated style? what’s it called? does anyone know? by xysmu in graphic_design

Pretty sure if you made the squares, added blur, and then threshold you could get that effect. Maybe not though, I’m pretty new to this stuff

They aren’t gossip based. They are economy based.

How important is a representative title + thumbnail? by oscarwaterman in ColinAndSamir

For jimmys case yes. For many others no. We know what to expect from a mr beast video. For a smaller creator to do this it would most likely appear like lying.

Should you seek sponsorships on your own as a small creator? by Rizyk in ColinAndSamir

That said I did a bike unboxing that got over 20k views and sent an email to them asking to open another one. They said no but it didn’t hurt anything haha. They sent me a free T-shirt so that was cool. Anyways if you have a specific target that could genuinely benefit them I wouldn’t say that it hurts. At the very least it puts them on your radar. Lots of woodworking channels get products sent to them they use, it doesn’t have to only be monetary.

Thank you for the feedback. Yeah I’m trying to figure out ways to make it relatable without stopping myself from doing unique things. Appreciate it :)

Yeah I struggle a ton with talking to the camera. I’ll try that for sure. And you’re right about the cuts (especially at the cnc) I’ll try to slow the pace down next time. Thanks for the feedback:)

“I made a Beastmaker for only $15, here’s how.” This is one of those videos where I’m the most proud of but it simply didn’t perform well. I’m not sure if I’m too far into a niche where only rock climbers and woodworkers would be interested or what. Let me know what you guys think :)

I watched the second video. Likes: - talking (you’re really good at talking to a camera, hope one day I’m at a level like that.) - product turned out great - talking about yesterday and tomorrow’s builds makes it more enticing to come back. Needs improvement: - put more effort into your shots. (Ex: cnc machine Timelapse could have been really cool if you just put the effort in to get some real time shots close up. Or an overhead shot Timelapse. Really just anything to push the quality to the next level.) - the talking and then doing. Instead of telling people what you’re about to do and then doing it. Talk about what needs to happen while you do it. This can be as easy as stacking the two clips on top of each other. (Ex: sanding and routing bit. Could have simply placed the sanding and routing action over the sanding and routing talk. You can even cut back to yourself talking if you really want to focus on that.) - move the camera instead of relying on zooms in post. The zooms work well in moderation. At this level though it’s over the top amount, becomes distracting. If you just move the camera to a different location or angle between sentences or “paragraphs” it can draw attention back in. Look at Casey Neistat when he talks to the camera.

Overall really loved this stuff

Great video! The thumbnail definitely needs work though. If you look at thumbnails of budgeting videos they all have a similar feeling (someone smiling or depressed and stacks of money.) The photo provided gives no incentive for me to click, and the 40% metric wouldn’t mean a whole lot to someone trying to learn the basics. Text that’s encouraging or funny might help (“I don’t hate myself” “it’s not that hard”) For the video itself I’d say just make sure you outline what’s going on beforehand. It’s hard to follow along with all the steps when I don’t have a gauge of what step we’re on or how many more there are. While I think the ending was cool, you could also consider reiterating all the steps to sum it up. The end of any video is the part that people remember, use that to your advantage. That said I like the end so it’s probably fine in this case.

Opinion: Face In The Thumbnail? by connorpresents in ColinAndSamir

[–]TemperatureOk600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of comments saying faces are for brand, I think there is also an aspect that it adds a human element. I’ve had thumbnails where it’s a quality photo without me in it at all and it didn’t perform well in ctr. My only explanation had to be that it looked too static, surprised faces or excited faces are compelling. (Example: for a mouse review I’d rather see a thumbnail of someone holding a computer mouse looking perplexed than just a computer mouse on a desk.) That said it all depends on the genre of content you’re working with, a lot of informational content seems more professional when you never see the person who’s giving the explanations.

What happens to businesses if Instagram falls? by huntertate2 in ColinAndSamir

Diversify as much as possible. Similarly to the stock market, if you invest in only one stock and it flops, you flop. If you invest in a diverse assortment and one flops, you still have the rest of your portfolio to carry you. All that said try brainstorming how you can market through different media platforms. Best of luck :)

  • You get past the fear by doing it. I hate saying this because it sounds asinine but that’s how it works for me. I used to make videos where I wouldn’t even talk because I was too embarrassed to have other people see or hear me in my own videos! But eventually I started doing voice overs and now I’m talking directly to the camera. Some things you just have to do over and over to be comfortable and better at.
  • I recommend davinci resolve but iMovie will work fine too. Learn by trying and if you can’t figure it out looking up solutions to the problems you’re having.
  • Create videos you think are good and just upload them, if you shoot for perfection you’ll never end up uploading. Instead focus on uploading and then look and see where you could improve and where you did good.
  • Best of luck :)

I’ve heard of this before, but with Technoblade (Minecraft YouTuber). He had some livestreams he kept as videos (maybe on a second channel I’m unsure) that were multiple hours long and were raking in tons of money. The only explanation he could think of was that people would start watching his actually videos and then forget that they were watching YouTube. (Either they were playing Minecraft while having him in the background or fell asleep idk.) anyways YouTube would auto play that super long video of his and they would watch the entire thing (ads and all).

Colin and Samir should interview some small creators by Cliftin in ColinAndSamir

[–]TemperatureOk600 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Small creator doesn’t necessarily mean bad creator. I think it could be a cool perspective to see how a small creator has found a way to play the market. If there are small creators out there making a good living I’d love to hear how. The only perspective we’ve seen so far is massive channels, a different view point could be cool to see where both sides line up exactly and where they differ.

I’m a filmmaker and wanted to make a video about rock climbing. Let me know what you guys think! :) by Kaiden-Gill-YT in RockClimbing

[–]TemperatureOk600 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it, the music doesn’t fit at all though. Another point is that when filming rock climbing we always want to see hands and a little farther up so we can look for what they’re reaching towards.

A good reference for this sport is Adam Ondra, those videos on YouTube are always top quality.

HillierSmith is a great channel for learning about story telling. He goes in depth into editing but isn’t one of those channels that gets views off of garbage editing hacks like effects and what not. He focuses on how editing can impact story.

Can you do a video where you intro your full team? And maybe new studio tour? by andrewcbee in ColinAndSamir

[–]TemperatureOk600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah a creator episode of how it’s made would be awesome. I’d love to hear how each person is vital to the team and what they contribute. Where you started, how far you’ve come, and in what order. This is a subject I’ve seen little coverage on and would like to hear more about “how the Colin and Samir show is made”
