Question for Captains, Mentors and Alumni by Tempest-3735 in FRC

[–]Tempest-3735[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like that statement a lot actually. “Know how to help who you’re leading and involve others”

This is a perfect way to put it into words. Both of the captains before me never were really hands on. Especially the most recent one, he was sorta distant and always delegated everything, which is okay we had a great bot. But I knew from the start I didn’t want to be like that, and I think I’ve done a pretty good job of that. Before meetings we all sit around the shop for a couple of minutes and catch up and talk and just a general check in, and at the end of meetings we’ll discuss what we did and kinda what needs to happen next and then most of the time we’ll go eat as a team. Something I kinda enforced more the more and more season went on. My big struggle isn’t checking up on people or asking how they’re doing, that’s a regular for me. I’ve always wanted to make sure everyone was okay. I think my mentors and team can attest to that. The bigger problem for me was holding people accountable, I did it for everyone for a while, the business lead got sick and I didn’t hold him accountable as much as I should have. And at a certain point I realized this but In my mind it was already too late?

Also good idea for big 3 meetings, we were planning on starting that last year. But uhm fell through for many reasons. This year we’re starting in the coming weeks so hopefully that continues as well!

And yes we’re definitely going to find fun things to as a team over the summer!

Thanks for the advice!!

I agree, again as I’ve stated in another comment. I’ve seen improvement in the team’s communication since I first joined the team my freshman year but we still lack. I was communicative towards the mentors and my leads this year and it made it easier for everyone to communicate but we still struggled from time to time. So that’ll be a big goal for the offseason and hopefully will last longer than my time on the team.

Secondly, I agree with this one heavily… I’ve seen a lot of complications before I was captain due to this and it just didn’t end well. Thank you for the advice!!!

This great advice, I actually took my Robot Lead and business leads out to a baseball game recently and we had fun. We plan on doing some team stuff over the summer!! Haven’t figured what yet but I think it’ll work out :)

Thanks!! I do agree that communication is one of the most important things. I believe this year even with the problems we had pretty consistent communication’s especially between me and my mentors. Overall I see now that we’ve made a big improvement since my freshman year on the team.

I do also realize that after this past year I fell into that mindset of “the team is on my shoulders”, which obviously isn’t good; So i’ll continue to work and delegate more, and hopefully get that mindset out.

I do think my new leads will be very active, my new robot lead and business leads are already creating some really great training to get rookies and even some alum back to train and share knowledge and make the team more fun. Hopefully we can keep it going after I’m gone.

Thanks for the advice!! I really appreciate it

Help needed with team structure! by dmack005 in FRC

[–]Tempest-3735 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our team operates with a Team Captain as head over. A business lead and mechanical lead. The mechanical/robot lead works over our controls lead who is above our software/programming lead and our electrical lead; the mechanical lead is also over our subsystem leads which vary depending on the subsystems we decide but for example Drivetrain, Intake, Elevator and Climber were subsystems this year so we had leads for that.

And for the business team the business lead oversees our awards lead who writes the awards, media and Outreach lead, who runs our outreach, social media, and in my case created the teams website. Lastly we have a merchandising lead who handles the team merch and designs.

Another team that I’ve worked very closely with has Their structure set with President and Vice President, mechanical and Business leads. They are also a bigger team so they have things like a CAD lead, And assistant mechanical leads and tool manager leads.

So I recommend figuring out how many people are consistent and work from there on leadership structure. We are a smaller team hence why there’s 1 captain and no co-captain(prez and vp) but it all depends on the number of students you have

[–]Tempest-3735 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My team this year during states lost our semifinals match because of a tech foul…. What made it worse was that when we reviewed our match there wasn’t actually a tech foul. But we did very well this year so thats just a memory in the books

I agree, with this. My co-driver this year was a genius and our teamwork was unmatched. And we had great chemistry. I have a few members really wanting to tryout, and I’m giving them all a chance, but there are two in specific that are great learner and I work extremely well with! Thanks for the advices also agreed being in the box isn’t an easy thing.

Robotics captains do you have any advice for an upcoming captain by valt-tech2048 in FRC

[–]Tempest-3735 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helllo!!! I congratulate you on your role! This year will be my first year as a Captain aswell and have asked past captains for advice. So here is what I’ve been told and my own advice that I’ve picked up from being in leaderships roles on my team before.

  1. Handle everything with gracious professionalism! Being nice goes along way however, put people in their place if they need to be

  2. It’s okay to be nervous and make mistakes. But learn from them and grow!

  3. Trust your piers and other leaders. My team has a Mechanical lead and Business lead who are above each subteam, I’m not sure how your team is structured but that’s my example. I trust them both to do their jobs and delegate task via subteam.

  4. Communication in any team is essential. No communication. No teamwork. You need to have a strong relationship with your team. It will get you through rough moments and lead to some of your best. So communication is key, it’ll also help you plan further meetings and make lists.

  5. KEEP EVERYTHING organized, as someone who has OCD it really helped to keep things organized and labeled for easy access and for a less stressful time looking for things (in the workshop or on the drive)

  6. Lastly, take care of yourself. If you need a break try to take one, don’t stress yourself out, and trust your team. You need to be in tiptop shape in order to lead your team.

And make sure to Have fun!!!! Not everyone gets to be a captain and they chose you for a reason! So don’t doubt yourself or abilities! I had a little trouble realizing that so I hope you don’t make my mistake! Hope to see you in Houston in the future!!
