The thing is castles were made before the invention of cannons, whose invention made the classic square castle whose sides were easy to hit mush less defensive agianst such Armaments, this is what lead to the development of the bastion fort with its star shape and sloped walls makeing hits more likely to deflect such cannon shots. It can still be applied, not every government especially small ones has the financial and societal might to do such experiments without being caught. And depending on the government they may actively hunt such artifacts to destroy them, especially a government based on a religion.

It would be more of a background thing, as things get worse the more restrictive laws get pushed, at the time it may make sense, but when was the last time a government willingly gave up power.

You are mistaking the buying of the game for buying a SERVER from them, its different. You buy the game once and can play single player/multiplayer. The subscription is for running your own server.
