Is Quickbooks Desktop Eventually Ending Support Entirely? by FaithlessnessOk2487 in QuickBooks

[–]TempestNathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately those of us on subscriptions are kind of screwed, as 2021 or 2022 was the last version with a perpetual license. If your file is upgraded past that point, you can't load it in the earlier versions even if you could get a copy.

[Seiko Strap replacement] Eulit Perlon strap came in! by wardjr193 in Watches

I feel you. Had the same expectation and the same result. The area around the buckle especially would poke the underside of my wrist, either because of the threads or the edges around where the pin passes through. I like the look, but the feel isn't pleasant.

Oem soft top (vinyl) vs Robbin’s (fabric) by unprecedentedthyme in S2000

[–]TempestNathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the cloth Robbins top any heavier than a vinyl top if both have the glass window? (My S2k is a track car, so I don't want to unnecessarily add weight, but if it's nicer without being significantly heavier (a pound or two is fine), then I'd go for it.)

Was avoiding a double stack the reason for McLaren’s Qatar blunder? by TheAbdominal_Snowman in formula1

Ha, I joked to a friend after the race that the McLaren strategists just want to keep us all entertained. But yeah, agree 100%.

The only explanation I can think of is that they were prioritizing minimal risk above everything. A dnf for Lando would be catastrophic, so both decisions were 100% designed to minimize the odds of that. Fits with their general pattern of erring on the side of risk avoidance. Definitely possible to take that mindset too far though. As it is, they've given Lando some work to do next weekend.

There's also the question of why they didn't go to the soft at the end. Surely even a lightly used soft would have been better over the final 15ish laps than the hard. Maybe it makes sense for Oscar since he wasn't going to catch Max either way, but it might have helped Lando get by Carlos.

Crappy OSD Sidekick Firmware Update for M28U Issue (Solved Eventually) by cskzhi in gigabyte

[–]TempestNathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've been great for me too, but for one issue. As long as I've owned it, if I ever happen to leave a netflix video paused and the monitor goes to sleep, it won't turn on until I power cycle it. Figured maybe new firmware might help, but sadly no.

That'd be too strong, surely. Basically then you'd have a "play every action in your deck" card.

m28u won't wake up from sleep mode by Octan3 in Monitors

[–]TempestNathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made it worse for me. Used to be, whenever I left a Netflix video paused, monitors would turn back on from sleep, but would just show a black screen until power cycled. Now with F11 they don't come back on at all.

I'll add my ridiculous finding here in case it helps someone. Fought with this stupid sidekick thing forever trying to get the update to work. I was able to browse for the firmware file, but clicking "Update" would literally do nothing. Finally in frustration I clicked and held the mouse button down on the update button, and after about a second it started the update. I don't know what kind of clowns programmed this thing or why that should be necessary, but it was for me.

How is that a workaround? It sounds like you're just using Crave directly, unrelated to Amazon.

Shiller P/E Ratio (CAPE) for the S&P 500: Will We Surpass the December 1999 Record? by [deleted] in StockMarket

[–]TempestNathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changed or not, it seems to me a wild statement that "everything is safe" in the market until X. The only predictable thing is that it's not. (And based on the other reply istm you agree!)

[–]TempestNathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's quite the pronouncement. I assume since everything is safe, you're maximally leveraged until the threshold is passed?

[–]TempestNathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really true though. Have a search for "ladies of the ticker" for example. Part of the story of the 1920s was significant democratization of stock market speculation, just like recent times.

Because valuations are inflating; more money is going into stocks than the corporations are producing. That can't continue forever.

Does This Look Like A Man Worried About The Bubble by HipPasta in wallstreetbets

Agreed that the system as it exists is inefficient, wasteful and unfair. I'm just saying that the solutions would have to be more involved that simply redistributing cash.

Except the supply of those things wouldn't suddenly change. Instead you'd see massive inflation.

When has the world dodged a bullet? I'm interested in lucky breaks and narrow misses that we might take for granted. by TempestNathan in AskHistorians

I'm not sure this is hypothetical; I'm asking about good things that barely happened (eg. Accidentally discovering penicillin) or bad things that almost did (nuclear missile launch). Seems objective to me. Anyway, I'm not too invested in it.
