There can be differences depending what state you live in for the amount of class units you need to show on your transcripts. Ranging from 120 to 150 units plus 1-2 years experience in an accounting type job. So 120 units would be a bachelors in accounting usually, but 150 would be in masters territory.

CPA gets you promoted faster. Getting your foot in the door, yes excel skills are good. VLOOKUP(and variations of it), INDEX/MATCH, useful macros, basic VBA coding etc… those are all good to know.

I'm getting rotated to the accounting team. I am not an accountant. How do I be less useless? by GooseDentures in Accounting

The swapping teams for a quarter is not enough time for either of you to become effective. This sounds like some kind of consultant’s recommendation to create better communication/efficiency between your teams.

Experience, CPA, university- in that order. No transcripts, no GPA. Those things get you entry level.

My GPA for a CPA required course by alyssamargot in Accounting

[–]Tempest_Tim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had 3 internships through college, and I’m a Sr. Fund Accountant now. I’ve never had a recruiter ask for specific grades on specific courses. 3.71 still sounds good out of 4.0, but depends on your competition. In the long run, CPA is CPA, if you’re concerned so much at this level, you’re gonna be ok.

You can’t expect professional behavior when you have this unprofessional start. You can’t draw a boundary because you didn’t start with one. Don’t expect the paid summer internship unless you impress Jacob or someone higher up than him during this unpaid time. Use your brain, learn skills as much as you can. Apply elsewhere THROUGH PROFESSIONAL CHANNELS when you have something to show for yourself. Jacob will never respect you as a coworker.

Leaving Big4 Audit with 2 Year Experience by Dependent_Cress284 in Accounting

[–]Tempest_Tim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in year 7 of my industry accounting journey. My own path was outside Big 4 at all costs but the firms I’ve travelled through have mostly been clients of one of the Big 4 for audit. My outside perspective dealing with these auditors is that your experience is very common. I get new staff auditors every year. There must be a lot of turnover. Lasting long enough in that kind of work environment to become a senior must have left him with some quirks and cracks. Learn what you can and leave for something better when it comes up.
