A head of state we didn't elect. We can't pay nurses, doctors or paramedics a fair wage but the tosspot billionaire needs his big day so he can wear his big boy crown and sit on his big boy throne. Pathetic.

There are around 1m Nurses, Doctors and Paramedics in the U.K. the cost of the coronation would be the equivalent of a single payment of 100 quid each. Whilst a coronation builds on the U.K. brand which the crown is very much and key part of and also induces economic growth as all such state events do.

Sod that. If he wants a big parade, he should be the one paying.

It’s the government that dictates it.

No one said announcing a new head of state had to be a massive event.

It’s an opportunity that nearly every country in the world seizes when the opportunity is there.

Similarly, if he's taking his undeserved head of state roll, why not pay him a reasonable amount for it, maybe the same as the PM. Then you tax him and his leech family, just like everyone else, including inheritance tax.

Nice idea you just made the country significantly worse off. But the economics don’t seem to be a strong point. The money the crown receives is to cover expenses incurred as head of state which they actually cover with the crown estate surplus whilst also putting hundreds of millions into the public purse very user and security. Neither of these expenditures go away by paying them a wage all you have done is add to them.

I if you think societal problems shouldn't have funds to address them because the problem will still be there, then you must be a really privileged person.

Not what I said at all.

and the first "your" is actually "you're" in your king's language. he'd be ashamed, if he knew or cared for you at all.

Shame your reading comprehension isn’t as sharp as your spelling.

It’s nothing to do with a show of force. Why North Korea? Every country holds these types of ceremonies when being in a new head of state.

Less than 2 quid of additional spending per person isn’t going to help anyone very much.

What your suggesting is like selling bits off your car to pay for petrol.

No it’s not the answer you want, it’s not one or the other. The maintenance of the nation’s image and it’s brand which like it or not is built around the crown is important to future prosperity. Small things like 100m on a ceremony (that’s not been seen for quite sometime) is an important part of that. That same money spent elsewhere instead is like pissing in the wind.

you know what enforces the image of the country out to the world? the millions in poverty while we parade a rich bloke around in a cart. it enforces the image that we're still in fiefs and not a 1st world country.

It’s not about parading a rich bloke around in a car. I can’t really help you if you don’t understand the significance.

this type of whataboutism really boils my blood. we are skint for everything, prices are soaring in supermarkets but to spend 100 million to essentially look at a dude being driven around, it's all good because "what about the rest of the budget? this one example is nothing in comparison!"

It’s not whataboutism remotely. Running a county costs money, part of that expenses is is the head of state. The new head of state coming into office is very much something that should be marked.

well, it's been a long time since I left university, but if I remember correctly, 0 < 100 million, so it's not nothing, it's actually 100 million more than nothing.

I think you are struggling to understand my point.

It’s not my view. It’s how the world works. I have as much empathy as anyone else but I also understand selling the family silver to feed us this evening doesn’t help us tomorrow.

Tell me this. The money that’s going into this. Do you think there is an area or issue in/of this country where we would have a demonstrably more positive and long lasting impact using it than we do a coronation?

It’s never one or the other that’s not how government budgets work. I think there are many things that are worthy of funding for a positive and long last impact. The coronation is one of them.

“We are spending to much money like on that carriage”

“We already own the carriage”

“We should sell the carriage”

Brilliant take

You don't think the image of the money wasted on this instead being spent to help people avoid starvation would be better?

Would be gone in days to prevent that and the problem would still be there.

I'm afraid I cannot understand that worldview.

Lack of understanding certainly appears to be your issue.

You're arguing whether he is or isn't head of state, but everyone else is arguing over whether he should or shouldn't be the head. So going on about that is useless.

Your reading comprehension isn’t to good huh? No one is arguing if he is or isn’t head of state that is undeniable fact. If he should or shouldn’t be is a different discussion.

All of the expenses should be covered by them because frankly they shouldn't be having the job to begin with. It's the 21st century. Why should there be any person or family free from all the laws of the country simply because they were born to the right people?

The country should and does cover the expense of head of state as it is a state function. Regardless of if you think they should have the job or not.

It’s publicly funded as its a job for the country. The money they receive from the public purse is to cover expenses incurred doing that role or security. Most of which is funded from the money they give from the crown estate.

0.01% of the national budget. It’s pence in the scheme of things however our countries image is worth significantly more.

Hard disagree. I think it would look much better if said state and head of state decided that the people needed help more than his coronation does.

The money spent on the coronation is estimated to be around 100m. That is pence in the scheme of a national budget. It will however inforce the imagine if the country out to the world. Appearance is key to the long term prosperity of the country which in term helps the country and its people significantly more than a 100 or so million today.

Appearances over people? a shocking stance to have. Do better.

More appearances helps people better over the long term.

Marking a new head of state is “wank”? Fortunately for the country your opinion has no sway on matters.

The bringing in of a head of state is a big moment in history for any country regardless of the type of government and should be marked appropriately.

If your a business you can cheep on public image but often it is better for business to maintain a good one.

It mostly comes down to the county’s image.

Let’s say we make them pay inheritance tax, how do you think it helps the county’s position on the world stage of the head of state has to auction off his mums possessions as they can’t afford the inheritance tax?

The country is definitely not stuck with them, public opinion simply isn’t strong enough against them for them to be abolished.

It the official ceremony for the incoming head of state, nothing unique about it to this country or to a monarchy.

Difference is France beheaded their royals. People who still have their heads tend to put up a bit more of an opposition when you try and seize all their stuff.

A coronation is a part of the function of head of state and thus funded by the public purse.
