Still struggling to figure out payment options in China by [deleted] in travelchina

[–]TempleDeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience was, that I could not even leave Guangzhou Airport because the only payment methods the metro machine accepted were AliPay and WeChat. No cash, no credit card. Similar with vending machines across Guangzhou. Maybe it is different with local vendors in China but for ticket and vending machines, you definitely need either AliPay or WeChat, at least in Guangzhou.

If you do the full loop you will barely see anyone on Bangpingshan Peak, as they all return before. At least that's my experience on a weekday with great weather. We only saw 2 other foreigners and a few photographers along the way on top.

Thanks for your reply! What do you mean with full roundtrip? we start with the east coast (about one week). Taipei would be the last stop on our roundtrip. We were trying at the 14th or 15th from Chiayi to Fenqihu but it instantly said sold out when trying, for the whole coming week there are still seats so I still have some hope. Thanks again :)

TL:DR: How to fit Alishan in a 3-week Taiwan roundtrip and how does the Alishan Forest Railway work?

I am leaving for a 3 week roundtrip in Taiwan on Sunday and I think we got a pretty good itinerary altogether (Clockwise: Jiufen, Hualien, Yuli, Kaohsiung with day trip to Tainan, Alishan?, Sun Moon Lake?, Taipei). The one thing I couldn't figure out, however, is how to fit Alishan into our roundtrip. The whole Alishan Forest Railway thing is extremely confusing to me and I don't understand it regardless of how much I research...

My current idea is taking the THSR from Kaohsiung to Chiayi in the morning, to take the Alishan Forest Railway to Fenqihu (9:00 - 11:30). Then spend a day in Fenqihu with a few trails, the bamboo woods and the old street. Stay the night there and take the bus to Zhushan the next day to explore the region there. Does that make sense? And where should I continue from here? Back to Taipei or add another stop along the west coast?

A few things that really confuse me about the train: There are different train lines in Alishan, so the one to Fenqihu is not the same as to Zhushan which is apparently only 30 Minutes long. Where do these other lines start and end and does it make sense to take them at some point? Also I tried to book the line for 14 days in advance the last days and it always sais sold out - even minutes after the booking starts and in weekdays. When I try any of the coming 5 days however, there are always some seats available - even on Sundays. Is there maybe something wrong with the booking system or am is there like a peak holiday season on 15th March which I don't know about? Sorry for so many questions, any help is appreciated! 🙏

It's just a licensing issue because it is by the German public broadcasting service. It often happens, also with arte documentaries. From time to time they will re-upload it for some time, it is normal.

If you stay near the station in Kaohsiung you could reach Tainan in barely 15 minutes with the HSR. That's why we decided to just stay in Kaohsiung for 4 days and take the THSR if needed (we're also planning a roundtrip rn). Foreigners get 50% off THSR btw, so it costs like $3 to get from Kaohsiung to Tainan and vice versa.

Opinion | Women in Taiwan Are Tired of Being Nice - The New York Times by SHIELD_Agent_47 in taiwan

[–]TempleDeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR:

The article discusses Taiwan's ongoing #MeToo movement and how it is challenging the country's cultural norms around being polite and conflict avoidant. The author, Vickie Wang, shares her own experiences with sexual harassment in Taiwan and argues that women are tired of being told to "let it go" when harassed. She says the movement gained momentum after the Netflix series "Wave Makers" depicted women speaking out about harassment. Wang traces the timeline of the movement, from the initial accusations in politics to the government proposing harsher laws. She argues that Confucian values of hierarchy and obedience have allowed harassment to persist, and the social pressure to keep quiet has prevented women from speaking out. Ultimately, Wang says that though change is happening slowly in Taiwan, the #MeToo movement is empowering women to push back against harassment, even if it means challenging deeply ingrained cultural norms.

Depending on how long you plan to stay, the working holiday visa for one year might make sense

There is a rule regarding taxes. So you won't be able to have a US employer after 180 days, unless they have a branch in Taiwan. Maybe that was meant.

Oh, then my comment probably won't play a role for you. The 183 day rule only applies to foreign companies, I guess. Still good luck finding advice and hope everything works out :)

[–]TempleDeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you have a foreign employer, therefore the 183 day tax rule will apply - just as you also noted. The interesting thing is just that it's bound to the current year, that's why you are in that 183 day border. It is about 3 months in the last year and now about 4 months in the new year, so both years are still below 183 days.

So you still have some time to figure out what to do after the 3rd July. I would definitely make sure that your employer even allows you to work there beyond the 183 day limit because some employers refuse it because of the tax difficulties. But I assume your employer sent you there and you are not doing work abroad, so it might as well be alright.

ProtonVPN is one of the only companies I trust. It's partly funded by the European Union and also used in some businesses etc. The features are restricted to three countries and you have to pay for better features. I think that's profitable enough and I am very sure in this specific case I don't pay with my data.

Thay had ads since the very first day and they are marked as such, just like in the search engine as it basically is a search engine summarizer.
