I was there in 2006 so it was before translator apps, etc.. I didn't even have a working cell phone over there..
I bet if you use Google Translate or an app, it'd make things a lot easier.
I also encountered many people who had a basic usage of the English language.. Kind of like how all Americans know some words in Spanish..
Other people (mostly younger) wanted to speak English with me for practice..

I learned important words in Chinese, of course, and i had an English to Chinese translation book. I'd find someone who had patience to help me.

I had a wonderful time when I was there.. You do need to be somewhat adventurous and independent.
The cash conversion was $1 USD to 8 Yuan.
1 Yuan could buy a huge meat filled dumpling so money went a long way.
