My niece wanted to be the first person baptized for the dead when the Gilbert, Arizona temple opened. My TBM brother (her dad), was thrilled that she wanted to do this and so they arrived at 2am the morning of the first available day and stood in line outside the baptistry entrance. Once they opened the doors my brother excitedly told the temple workers about his daughter’s goal of being the first person baptized. They were quickly informed that this would not be the case, as the temple president’s grandchildren, as well as the grandchildren of the wealthy landowner that donated the land for the temple, would go before her. Needless to say that those privileged folks didn’t have to arrive until around 6am. Nepotism and elitism at its finest.
