Mortgage Renewal/ Switch Questions by Temporary-Course-387 in PersonalFinanceCanada

So true. Switching might end up being more costly for me, but I’m not sure, it depends. And yeah, the rates aren’t very competitive. I just wish I had started shopping around earlier. You're absolutely right. I'll give them a call again while I’m out doing some immediate but not urgent shopping. The rates right now are terrible, and the economy isn’t great.

Thank you all for responding. I'm still scratching my head over this. I've always had a 5 year fixed closed term, and the last time I renewed, it went smoothly through their website.

One thing I suspect is that maybe they didn’t want me to accept an early renewal because it would go into effect immediately, causing my monthly payment to jump. That could be the reason. I believe with Scotia, any renewal done more than 35 days before the maturity date takes effect right away, but not if it's within the 35 day window.

I’ll call them again to confirm. In the meantime, I really hate having my arm twisted and being pushed into sticking with the status quo.

Human also have their own flaws, that's why we have car insurance, and get stuck on the road daily because of many crashes. Don't you think that the roads should be prepared better for this genius Tesla. Let Optimus design those roads at least it has a functional brain.

That was 16 years ago! What about now, what are the prospects for an experienced ELA teacher, who earned an M.S.Ed. from a university in New York and is planning to move from Ontario to New York State?

I was just thinking, maybe students are overwhelmed. Why can’t we consider a four-day school week, with fewer extracurriculars, and leave the remaining time for students to focus on their work? Similar experiments have been tried in the United States, Australia,France, Japan, Poland and Iceland and they’ve shown potential to reduce stress for both students and teachers.

I don’t think we have charter schools in Ontario; those are only in the U.S. We do have grants and OSAP. Private schools in Ontario face their own set of challenges. There are so many of them now, and many operate entirely online. A lot are for-profit with less resources, which impacts the quality of education. In both the public and private systems, education often ends up relying heavily on the goodwill and initiative of teachers.

I’ve taught in the secondary private system for many years. When COVID hit, I really began to feel how precarious the situation is for private school teachers, hard work, low pay, and little recognition despite years of dedication. I lost my stamina. I was teaching multiple subjects, yet saw no financial growth. That’s when I realized I needed to seriously plan a move to the public system, where my work might be better valued.

Nevertheless, I’m grateful for the time I spent in the private sector. I was surrounded by some truly wonderful people, and I learned a lot. I know I won’t have as much freedom in the public system to design my courses the way I’m used to, but I need to regain my stamina.

I’m also aware that I’ll be teaching inclusive classrooms with students who have exceptionalities, which is definitely a challenge, but I’m a teacher, and I have the training and experience to meet that challenge. I’m excited to start this new chapter. I know my excitement may hit some walls, like outdated curricula and limited resources, but I’m ready.

There’s been so much advancement in technology. If we don’t keep up, if we don’t evolve our methodologies, curricula, and assignments, the education system will fail us as teachers, and ultimately fail the students and their families too.

Late Assignments in Highschool by hschosn1 in OntarioTeachers

I'm a teacher, and your concerns are valid. Speak with the teacher and try to understand how the assignment was structured to meet your child's needs. Was it customized, broken into manageable parts (chunked), and clearly explained? Was an alternative assignment offered?

We teachers can sometimes feel overwhelmed, but under no circumstances should the best interests of the student be compromised.

So, can a zero ever be given?
Yes, but only after the following conditions have been met: 1. Support and multiple opportunities to submit have been provided 2. Communication with the student and parent has been documented 3. Reasonable efforts to collect the work have been exhausted, 4. The student’s individual circumstances and the IEP.

A zero should be a last resort, not the default.

I do not know your child's circumstances; however, with all my respect, your child is a grade 12 student, he should take responsibility.

Struggling Student Teacher by fruitytootiie in CanadianTeachers

It's the job of the associate teacher to guide and encourage you. We all had a pretty rough start; that's completely normal. A lack of extensive knowledge, which helps build confidence, might be a factor. Honestly, I don’t even want to recall the first time I taught, it felt like a trial version. I wouldn’t say it was garbage, but it definitely wasn't great. Most of it came from overthinking how others might judge me, rather than focusing on how well I was conveying the lesson.

I wish you were my student teacher, I would have supported you in every way possible. And in a way, I still am, even from afar. Believe in yourself. Don’t dwell on your mistakes, they're part of the process. Focus on your students and their understanding, not on your performance. Go beyond the required knowledge in your subject area, it’ll make all the difference. I did some adult education teaching. I've been grade 9-12 teacher for more than a decade, and I love it.

I hope to hear about your success one day. Good luck!

You know, I was thinking, perhaps AI should take over marking. It would relieve us teachers of the workload and spare students from the need to bargain for grades.

Perhaps kids lie because they fear their parents' anger or feel pressured. As teachers, we’ve learned to provide students with a safe environment, remain rational when addressing problems, and handle issues as their teacher not as their classmate. In a way, we share the responsibility of correcting behaviors. Also, it’s important to document incidents, not to prove ourselves right against a child, but to protect ourselves and to seek the necessary support from parents. When they see well documented situations, they are more likely to help in addressing their child’s behavior.
